What's more irresponsible, Ra, killing 214,000 Japanese to end a war, or killing 1,000,000 Japanese and 1,000,000 Allied troops to end the war?
What people so readily forget today is that Japan wasn't a normal nation. They were a nation that thought they were LITERALLY God's Country. They worshiped the military and, especially the Emperor (who was a puppet of the military), as Gods. TO THE JAPANESE THEY WERE GODS! Thus, they felt that the war was a divine event, and the hundreds of thousands of deaths over the long run were easy to excuse, however the instantaneous deaths of a couple hundred thousand people was much less easy to excuse as being the desired events of the Gods.
Today the United States is not trying to prevent all nations from acquiring nuclear weapons, but trying to prevent secretive dictatorships from gaining these weapons. Nuclear weapons are a weapon effective through threat, not use. The threat of use gives countries a bargaining chip. It's the nations that aren't open about their nukes that are scary. Iran isn't admitting that they are trying to get the weapons which is of concern because is their secrecy because they mean to use them or sell them to terrorists? That's why the United States is concerned about SOME other countries with nukes. You'll never see the United States complain about most nuclear nations (UK, France, Israel, etc.) because these nations have solid governments. Nations like Russia and China (Communist countries) are more of concern because the history of communist countries struggling for money. The concern here is that they will proliferate their weaponry (It's widely known that some of Russia's nukes are available on the black market; China aided both Iran and Iraq in their nuclear aims). But in the end, what is of the gravest concern (and the focus of our attention by and large) is the acquisition of nuclear weapons by secretive nations like Iran and Iraq where we don't know what they plan to do with them.

Inciting fear in its citizens is a propaganda tactic of any right-wing regime. History apparently does repeat itself, unfortunately.
The U.S. government wants everybody to believe that there are *bad* people out there whose sole intent is to harm us. The same government doesn't tell its people that it's been on an imperialistic mission to take over the world since day one.
Iraq has oil resources that the U.S. wants. War is just a cowboy game they play like poker.

The US has controls on its government military, other nations often don't and as Stalin said, he would rather see 3/4 of the world destroyed if 1/4 would remain communist

For example: Do you feel better that India and Pakistan are capable of lobbing these missiles at each other? Do you trust them to behave (control) themselves more than you would the U.S.?
I seriously doubt it.
