Just like Pakistan is a muslim country. I am not saying that India should be a Hindu theocracy where religion would be forced upon people. More like Israel, which is a Jewish state but not a Jewish theocracy. Personally, I don't think I want to reject secularism but sometimes our govt. seem to be focused on pleasing minorities only.

India is a country with majority Hindu population but it has a secular democracy.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India. Denmark is not a Christian country just because most of her people are Christians.

As far as our government is concerned, it will be democratic even then.

It will try to get Muslim votes anyhow even then.

I doubt the overall situation will be any different than now.

Some idiot below tried to insult Hindus by declaring Ganesha was a female and declared it to be a fact!

Sorry dear, but Ganesha is just symbolic. It is portrayed as a male, that's all. He represents Wisdom also. So pray to him and may be you will get a bit wiser.

Symbolism is beyond understanding of shallow or uneducated people.

As for ignorant above go and get the definition of cult. Hinduism is set of Philosophies.

Christianity is cult founded by St. Paul.

For Zaire below:

"Hindus in Pakistan have declined from 23 % of the total population in 1947 to less than 2% today.........state-sponsored religious discrimination against Hindus through bigoted "anti-blasphemy" laws.. millions of Hindus being held as "bonded laborers" ...in rural Pakistan, something repeatedly ignored by the Pakistani government. Pakistan aggressively portrays its struggle against India as a Hindu-Muslim conflict, making it clear that its own Hindu minority is fair game for persecution.

Even within India, the pattern is the same. The combination of Pakistani-sponsored violence and local anti-Hindu sentiment has led to a similar "religious cleansing" of the Kashmir valley, where almost all the Hindus have fled.

Much like the Bangladeshi Hindu refugees in India, the Kashmiri Hindus are an unpalatable subject for many Indians, an ideological embarrassment for some people who feel uneasy about discussing the persecution of Hindus by Muslims. ... ignoring the campaign launched by various Muslim groups to use public threats and violence, including murder, to terrify the local Hindus into leaving.

........ Human rights activists in Bangladesh and Pakistan, many of whom are not Hindus, have painstakingly documented the violations of basic human rights of Hindus in their country."

Well, brother Islam is not forced on people in Pakistan.Minorities are given the same status as it is given to Moslims.Even the white colour in Pakistan's flag(Avik,if you are Indian you must have seen Pakistan's flag)represents the minorities.
But as you say that India should be a Hindu state like Israel is a Jewish state,I think that will be very difficult because apart from Hindus Moslims are in a big number there. While in Israel almost 98% population(may be more than that)is Jew.So,it will be very difficult for the government.

I like that India is a place with a lot of religious diversity. I think it would be impossible to make it a Hindu country, considering that in some regions of India, Muslims outnumber Hindus. I think India has a good thing going with the formal secularism/informal religious diversity thing.

Until 1948 India, Pakistan and Bangla Desh were all part of British India. In 1948 India and both wings of Pakistan (Bangla Desh was East Pakistan) separated with a massive movement of Moslems heading out of India and Hindus heading out of Pakistan.

At that time Pakistan was the most Moslem country in the world.

Later, with the help of India Bangla Desh ceased to be part of Pakistan and declared itself an independent nation.

India has always been a secular democracy since then - the world's largest democracy.

I agree with you. Hinduism is a lovely religion, and i think it would be a good thing for the country to be like Israel, with regards to religion. That way ,if people don't like it, they can get out , or not go there in the first place.

No. Secularism is the way to go. If Muslim countries would become avowedly secular, it would solve a lot of the world's problems. No established religion -- it's caused enough bloodshed already.
