The green is a covering for the stone that makes up the blackboard. The slate needs to be treated in order to be written on and erased. If it is not treated then it will fall apart and a new piece of slate needs to be found and reshaped into another blackboard.

When I was young there were only black boards and they were made out of slate. as the years went on they went to green but never changed the name to green boards. In actuallity they are not really called blackboards anymore. They are called chalk boards. For some reason tho the name black board is used.

I guess green is the color of life and so the science we were and still getting it through the blackboard ,plus green never selfish and so the teacher who gives his unweighted( valuable) time and effort to teach others to take them from darkness to light of science ,thank GOD to have unselfish hearts

origianlly, writing boards were painted black so the contrast of the white chalk is seen even far. however, thru times, many observed that the contrast easily strain the eyes, so ,, other colors were tested and the color green has the most soothing of all.
there was also a time when COLGATE toothpaste has the monopoly in the market, and so, when other subsequent brands were introduced, customers got accustom of wrongly calling all tootpaste as colgate. e.g." can i buy a colgate, the closeup brand one?"

It is called black board cause they used to be pieces of wood painted in black, so that the chalk could be seen.
I guess then they realised that with green paint the chalk showed too, but there was no point in calling it "green board" cause it already had a name...
