Our own free will has to be the largest hindrance but I've learned that if we keep praying and seeking God's will that eventually our will lines up with His.
It takes dedication but it can be done. God bless!

I think one of the great hinderances to this question is ironically; the church. Due to poor translations, some of them intentionally misleading (King James). We are not looking in the right places. Regardless of your spiritual or religious beliefs, it is hardly arguable that nature is a perfectly sustainable system of harmony and balance. The mistranslation which lead us to believe that our right in life is to dominate the planet and all of its lifeforms is leading us into self-destruction. Some Christians even exclaim that we should participate in deforestation and other irresponsible practices in order to "speed the second coming along" as if Jesus is just sitting up in the Heavens waiting for us to do our duty and destroy the Earth before we will come down and save all of the good Christians.
I have news, read your bible and do the math.
Anyway, Jesus talks about the the church as small gatherings of people talking. He doesn't even intend for their to be buildings or for tithe to be paid to any institution. Study the translations of the bible you will see where the church continually edits away for self preservation. ie the church added the notion that the actuall temple was destroyed on the third day, Christ was simply refering to his body being destroyed. Another interesting fact although somewhat unrelated; the original Greek never said that Mary was a Virgin, it only said that she was young, It was blatantly mistranslated and has resulted in Mary being "worshiped" alongside Christ.
If you are a Christian, shed the old testament and focus on the teachings of Christ, the prince of peace...Not the war-hungry,fearful of everything, xenophobic, selfish doctrines which American organized religion has come to support.

the only real hindrance is ourselves. We sometimes do something or make a choice that is not from God but we say it is so we can feel justified in our actions or decisions

Unwillingness to recognize we do have all the answers we need, unwillingness to be responsible and accoutable for our actions, choices, and outcomes. Unwillingness to accept that God is a source of all things and that we are able to partake of that source freely- meaning, should we allow ourselves the freedom of listening too our intuition (what I call God's Knowledge dwelling within each of us) we would then be capable of making better choices more and more often, and have an easier time rebounding from negativity and our poor choices.
So, for me, the hinderance is in looking outside of ourselves rather than within toward God. I hope you understand what I mean.
Also- spend time in prayer- try saying something along these lines "God, I am here ready to be a servant to your divine work, and to my own authentic self. God, I will do my best to stay open and willing to learn and grow. What is it I need to know in my life right now? I will continue to strengthen and build upon my good deeds. I am grateful for the lessons I am given and hope to learn with more ease throughout my life. I am grateful to experience this state of physical being and all the Earths beuaty. I love the Earth, for it is the bossom of God who feeds and keeps us. Life is Magnificient and I rejoice in you the power and glory of love and creation." (you may also set an intention such as, I am having great difficulty understanding my spouse and I am wanting to open myself to this experience by doing the right things, what would you have me know?)
THEN Meditate- you see, praying is speaking or setting your intention and meditating is listening or receiving a message. Spend equal amount of time in prayer and meditation if not more in meditation- God has a lot to tell you - open and listen, feel it, experience it.

sin
disobedience
not reading the Bible (daily bread)
unforgiveness
Ask the Holy Spirit. Time is a real key issue, also. Maybe preparation is needed for this to come to pass.
