I filled out the paperwork at the airport. It's been 24 hours, I called them, they said they haven't located it yet. What do I do now? How long do I wait? What is the next step?

Keep following up with them, the squeaky wheel does get the oil. Also, if you had travel insurance, file a claim if they cover lost luggage.

Lost luggage is a big problem in the airline industry (unfortunately) but keep hope.

With most airlines your luggage will have to be lost for more than 5 days it they don't locate it. They airline should at that time send you some sort of claim form to fill out of the items that were in the bag. In addition, most airline have a consequential amount that is offered for each 24 hr period that the luggage is lost. You will have to call your carrier to verify this fact and what they offer.
In addition, most luggage is domestic is found within the first 24 hours and international may take at least 48 hours depending on airline schedule and time changes.

If more time has passed and your still without your bag, you may be entitled to some cash compensation. Check your airlines web site for more information.
