On stuff like pizza, you can just leave them leaves whole, cooked or added freshly.
Otherwise, chopping and shredding (into ribbons) are good ways to prepare it. Throw it in italian dishes after they're cooked.
You can cook the basil as a regular seasoning, but it won't have the same "fresh" taste.

Lots of ways! You can rub it and add it to herb tea(lovely for a cold) You can chop it finely and add it to most Italian dishes. A sprinkle over a pizza makes the pizza delicious. You can mince it with cheese to make a pasta sauce. And finally, if you're a homemade freak, you can mince it with tomatoes, garlic, oregano, salt, onion, boil the paste till most of the water's evaporated and store it in the fridge for upto a week. It makes a lovely base sauce for most dishes.

use only the leaves. you can roll the leaves up and cut to make basil confittie to put in salads, or blend it up and make pesto with olive oil and pine nuts.

Pick them and wash them a bit.
Chop them for stews, meat seasonings, and assorted sauces. Or use them in stir-fry. Yum!
