Some say the bible should not be taken literally. My question is, with this being the case, should the ten commandments be taken literally. When it tells us that we should not steal, kill, commit adultery, coveth our neighbors property, and to honor our parents should these things be ignored. Whether you believe in God or not are these things not to be taken literally? Is it okay to steal, kill, commit adultery, lust after your neighbors's possesions and disrespect our parents? When you rebuke the bible did you know you are rebuking the morals set forth in the ten commandments as well?

I got your answer mr. cave man for my language question... so I thought maybe you deserved another from my part. Of course I don't think the ten commandments should be taken literally, that wouldn't be very much fun for anyone now would it?

On a more serious note, I think that people should strive to be good people, and I don't think that necessarily means ascribing to the ten commandments whether you take them literally or not. After all, the guy who is nice to his neighbour and does not cheat on his wife because he loves them both would be a more genuinely good person in my opinion than the guy who is nice and does not cheat because he wants to gain a nice room for himself up in that little cozy place in the clouds - aka - Heaven.

Of course it's not okay to do most of those things you mentioned... like stealing your neighbours posessions or treating your parents badly. However, most people do not need a book to tell them this. People made God and the bible to help enforce a morality that they also established themselves... living in a world in which killing someone else is acceptable is no fun for anyone, hence morality cames into play. So we all agree to follow this moral code and it works better for all of us - I don't steal from you and you don't steal from me and we both get to keep our property. And if the logic of the arrangement didn't convince people, making up a God and Heaven and Hell would. So there, not only is it a better arrangement for all of us... but if we don't play by the rules God will look down on us and send us to hell. What is viewed as right and wrong came from people themselves, and so did the idea of God and the ten commandments.

I'm sorry, but your argument is misleading at best.

Imagine a religious text from a tradition that has many gods. In that text it states that stealing, murder, etc. are wrong. Am I allowed to "rebuke" that book, or am I, by your logic, also rebuking THOSE commandments if I do so?

Work with me here. Imagine now a book that says that up is down, black is white, and right is wrong, etc. In other words, it has a lot of false trashy stuff in it. But now suppose it has this weird line that says: "By the way, 2 + 2 = 4." Do you think it's OK if I rebuke the book but still accept the weird formula in it? In other words, can't something be true (or false) independently of whether it appears in a book or not? And can't some parts of a book be false while others are true?

If not, what do we do with Danielle Steel's silly novels? Some of what she writes is true.

"If atheists are the loose thinkers they declare to be, then why do they take their morals and values from Christianity with some exceptions?" A formidable fact. options backing it up? My morality is in conserving with empathy, expanding the easy solid and own benefit at the same time as attempting to keep man or woman and team damage minimized. I agree that a number of those concepts are also concepts Christians carry, yet they were not invented through Christians nor their doctrine, nor are they unique to Christians nor their doctrine. Your fact, and as a outcome your question, is demonstrably pretend. "yet then they take some thing of the morals and values wholesale from their former faith." This assumes that each and every one gay atheists were once Christian, which isn't the case. It also assumes that each and every thing else it truly is considered moral contained in the Christian set is likewise moral for them. until eventually you've records to lower back up this declare (which I really doubt), i stumble on it not likely that the gay atheist considers it immoral blaspheme the holy spirit or to swear.' "The atheists I actual have spoken with about this pick me to have self belief that they invented their personal morals after their atheist conversion and ...through organic twist of destiny... followed a similar morals of their former faith." so that you're basing the standpoint of all atheists on -one- own interview? Pathetic. "The Vikings idea it replaced into okay to kill those with the intention to scouse borrow their stuff. The Vikings also captured human beings and acquired them as slaves." i wager you under no circumstances examine the old testomony. There are diverse examples the position Yahweh instructions the shortcoming of life of many human beings and tells the Israelites what the plunder, what now to not plunder yet kill rather, and what to do with the plunder. "The Vikings also captured human beings and acquired them as slaves." lower back, you pick to comb up on your old testomony. God provides instructions, that are part of the 613 elements of the regulation, which explicitly say who you could enslave, how a lot to promote your daughter for as a slave, how regularly and how significantly you could beat your slaves, etc. "in a large number of Muslim international locations women persons are truly a guy's belongings without rights." I advise you inspect the Bible for situations of sexism as well, mutually with: a million Corinthians 14:34 - 35, Ephesians 5:22 - 25, and Leviticus 12:2-5.

The truths expressed in the Ten Commandments are very universal. Those who choose to disregard their simple lessons are doomed to be on the outside of society.

Ignoring them will likely put you at odds with laws around the world.

Ha ha ha! That's the reason why I should be a Christian? These are morals are there in almost all religions around the world. Why should I limit myself to the Bible?

Absolutely. If my husband covets our neighbor's wife, all hell will break loose.
Would also be nice if adultery applied to men as well as to women. Oh well, can't have everything, can we? Guess I'll have to tolerate his concubines.
