Never had one as a child. Got a donkey from a Landlord that had been his sister's when younger. We were real poor when I was not in my late teens. Maybe that was why we never had one. My mother never in her whole life had one. Her family never even got her a real doll. She had a tin pan doll. It was not soft or of good quality. Then I bought one that was made to celebrate the hundred year anniversary of the teddy bear. Press the paw and it tells the history of how this stuffed toy got its name. That was so great. The sales person hugged it so lovingly in her arms. The deep rich brown color was its color. The unbelievable softness of it just seem to melt in my arms as I hugged it for the first time. It seemed so vulnerable and needed to be cared for. The significance of why it was made had increased its value. For to pass it down to my niece when I die, it should be in excellent condition. It is placed on display in a respectful way. It is one of those things that always joy brings.

supposedly it is the way they do the face. a real bears face wouldn't work. but they made him look "cute" (rounder face) and then made him easy to hold.
What might have helped is the original cartoon that was done. It showed a sad looking cub on a leash. Teddy Roosevelt refused to shoot it, it wasn't "sporting".
That's when someone asked him if they could name a stuffed bear after him. He said okay, but I doubt people will want it.
hope you don't mind a little of the history.

It's a security thing sometimes. Sometimes it's just the kid in us all. Men like to play with remote control toys, and women like teddy bears. It's just life I guess.

Absence of hugging from family members make them to buy those things, they try to compensate real hugging with the teddy bears and soft toys. It fulfills there emotional needs (hug therapy)

its all based on chilhhod memories. they are cute and you cuddle them as if a friend. many collect them as some are worth alot of money. teddy bears have been associated with kindness, love, caring and nuturing. they are soft and cuddle to sleep on and with. to children its their friend they grew up with when sick and were always there for them when they were sick with something when no one could be around you.

I think it's just a comforting feeling you get from holding them. It might remind you of your childhood or you must just be fond of the person who gave it to you.
