It is a very difficult question to answer.
I would advise you against detoxing a person alone and without help. It would all depend on the length of addiction and the person's physical and mental health.
My parent's volunteer full time at a christian community detoxing centre, and believe in cold-turkey with constant supervision. I have seen many an addicts struggle with this problem. Sorry they cannot help, it's in China.
My immediate advice is a family doctor or a hospital.
A caring family doctor may advise with some of the health issues if you intend to go it alone, a hospital has a detox ward. If you are in UK, that means National Health.
I know of many addicts who check into detox at least once a year, and almost all are homeless and jobless.
Also, In my experience ex-addicts going back to heroin is almost 100%, whatever method they use. This needn't be the case if underlying causes for the addiction are treated alongside the addiction itself. A hospital or Doctor could point you in the right direction.
Long term addiction comes with it's own problem's of associated illnesses ( I've seen long-term untreated abscess resulting in the loss of limbs).
It is very tough, but is very common and there are a lot of resources available. You need not face this alone and I would not advise it - seek help.
All the best, and don't worry. I'll be rooting for you.

Nothing about this will be easy. It doesn't sound like you are the addict, but are asking for a family member or friend. Are they on-board, following an intervention, or have they come to you off their own bat? Are they ready?
What is required is nothing less than a surrender of their life to your care, an abdication of their dignity to you, and that is what is most addicts cannot do. Have they seen their GP regarding Methadone or similar? But essentially, this is NOT the answer. They need to confront why they feel they need to debase, abuse and harm themself, why they feel life is not worth living in, but escaping from. They need to be able to articulate this, and then need to be confronted by someone who has been there, done that, survived, and is thriving now, without substance dependancy. And on a practical level, if you are keeping them at home, cold turkey would be the best way to go. It will be the only thing that rams home to them the mess they are in. Ensure you talk to them about what they are going through, and are video-taping it. This means, for them, effectively imprisonment in one room of a house, preferably with an en-suite bathroom, with NO trips outside, with no phone contact with the outside world, with someone accompanying them at all times, and if you are leaving them, they need to be locked in the room - obviosly not good if there was a fire. Allow no visitors, who may have been contacted to pass drugs to them, no substances such as aerosols or glue to sniff, and when preferably three weeks has passed, they need to have a gathering of the right people around them to witness their victory, and with whom to pledge that they have learnt the value of their life. Anything less is pointless.

You say not cold turkey, but have eliminated, pratically, all of the ways to detxox. The only thing I can think of is to acquire some methadone, and stay away from the source. Also, you will need help from a higher power (God). Also, pray and meditate.

Okay, honey....let's get real! Your seeking the softer way out of a razor-blade situation....Heroin, affects the body by causing it to become physically addicted, this isn't just in your mind, your body right now is your enemy, in as much as quitting without help could cause you to become sicker than you've ever been in your life! Your gonna need some medical help...oh sure, in the movies "Tough-guy's" tie themselves to chairs, get locked in rooms and crap, but on the real side, who wants to wake up in their own vomit and diarrhea.....Go to the hospital, they'll place you on some meds and monitor your detox....quit trying to be "Rambo"..get some help! But get it now, while your inclined to do something about your disease!

Sweetheart, you have taken the 1st step. Be proud of yourself !!!!
Unfortunately there is no other way. You need support and hard love. I wish I could give you the answers, but I can't.
However I can tell you that I have experienced friends and their family in this situation, the outcome was very sad. You need to realise your own worth, and then do something about it, b4 it is 2 late.
No one can do this for you angel, you have to do it yourself with external support.
Good look babe, my thoughts are with you x x x x

See a doctor!! If you detoxify yourself from Heroin you can kill yourself!! Without heroin some bodies shut down the organs!! People generally need to see a doctor and be put on medication to help ease the body off heroin!!

your question isn't reasonable...the only options are cold turkey(which is nearly impossible) and rehab. i would strongly recommend rehab..
