I spent 4 days in the hotel and wondered what was an appropriate amount to leave the maid when I leave?
Is there a guideline for tipping for rooms? (yes I did leave something, just not sure if it was enough)

I remember back to when I had "menial" jobs and how it would just brighten the heck out of my day to get a tip that was unexpected or well more than what I thought I deserved.

So now I always leave a tip based on the service I receive. These people make next to nothing for their wages, and if they do a great job, I leave them well more than the "going rates."

And I have a feeling you left more than enough...cause you're just too darn nice. :-)

Glad to know you made it back safe and sound!

I don't believe there is a set 10%, 15%, etc. as in food services as the housekeeping staff is generally doing their job. They are not running back and forth to get you extra drinks, more ketchup, more salad dressing, etc as in food services. About the only thing extra that housekeeping would do is to bring you extra pillows, towels, etc. if you ask for it.

I think the average person leaves around $2 a night. Some actually go as low as $1 a night, others go as high as $5 a night. However, I generally reserve $4 & $5 a night for when there is more than 2 people in the room especialy if you have a hurd of kids and the place is a little more messier than if there were 1 or 2 people (adults) in the room. Kids tend to spread things out all over.

If you leave 15% of the bill, as others have suggested, you could be leaving a hefty amount of money for something that is their general job. And then you'll be wondering where all your money went.

Also, depending on the hotel accommodations, if you are staying in a 5 star hotel you may want to leave more than $2 a night as some, not all, 5 star hotels the staff goes completely out of their way to make your stay comfortable.

Whatever you left, I'm sure it was greatly appreciated by the housekeeping staff.

It really depends on the class of the hotel, for TOP END hotels 5% of the bill daily (anywhere from $10 to $50 a night).

For all other hotels, give them a $5 and keep it moving.

You give tips for two reasons one to show gratitude, the second requesting superior service.

If you are giving the tip for superior service double what you would do for to show gratitude and let them know what you want.

10-15% of what you paid? What are you, an idiot? If you stayed in a $250 room (not unusual in cities unfortunately), you'd leave $25-$40 per day? $2 - $5 is normal. Sheesh.

RECENTLY, I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY MAIDS. GOING TO HOTELS NOWADAYS ARE REALLY AN UNKNOWN ENVIRONMENT.
THE TOP SPREAD IS NEVER CHANGED. REGARDLESS, WHETHER A $50.00 ROOM OR $200.00+ ROOM, CHECK OUT THE MATTRESS, COME BACK ON-LINE AND LET US KNOW HOW COMFORTABLE YOU SLEPT.
THERE WAS A TIME, WHEN A MAID WAS PAID BY OWNER OR MANAGER. FOR ME TO TIP A MAID, I MUST SEE QUALITY SERVICE. SUCH AS, CLEAN LINEN, BLANKETS, TOWELS,etc... I HAVEN'T ENCOUNTERED THIS. BUT, IN THE EVENT I DO-A GENEROUS TIP TO FEED THE FAMILY FOR THE DAY IS OK.

Yeah...what he said. I'm sure you left plenty. From what I know, many people don't tip their maids very often at all in hotels. Therefore, as Mr. Vacuum said, a nice little surprise probably made their day!

(Glad to have you back. :) )

If you are there working as a whore you should probably tip the maid quite well or next time she may leave stained sheets on your bed.

Why is it that people think that tipping is required? Tipping is something that is done for excellent service and it is up to the person tipping how much he/she wants to give.
