is one better then the other or are eithe one is better then component video??

HDMI- handles multichannel PCM audio up to 8 channels and Digital to digital video signals.
DVI-only handles digital to digital video signals.
both cables have the same picture quality but DVI lacks audio.
and remember that component video transfer Digital to analog to digital again. so is not digital video.

You can buy DVI to HDMI adaptors. Both are better than component video.

hdmi - high definition multimedia interface handles both audio and video. dvi - digital video interface only handles video. i believe both are better than component video. hdmi cables and equipment are expensive, but is the latest and greatest.
