Glass all the way

FOOD SAFE plastic buckets that are not damaged are fine. They are cheaper, do not impart plastic taste, and easier to clean and sterilize. If the inside of your plastic fermenter is scratched, then it makes it nearly impossible to sterilize (which is why lots of people like glass, it doesn't scratch as easily).

Glass carboys are good for secondary fermentation, as there isn't much (if any) additional kreusening to clean off.

That being said, the best fermenters aren't glass or plastic, they're stainless steel.

beer is home-brewed in plastic bins.

The problem with a 5-gallon glass container that they tend to have a narrow neck and there may not be enough contact with the air for the beer yeast to develop and produce the alcohol.

Glass will not only sterilize better but you don't run the risk of imparting taste into the product

If you are talking about the fermenting container, it rally does not matter as long as you have food grade plastic.

If you are talking about the final container (bottle or kegs) then choose glass unless you have a metal keg.
