Part of being a toddler is discovering your boundaries. As a parent, you should stay active and stay consistent. With enough persistence and love, they will get it.

Because as we all know, they have to be taught. When you teach someone, usually you have to do it by repitition. Being a parent, you will be a broken record. I have a 15 year old and a 22 month old. Trust me, even the 15 year old has to be told a million times.

Kids may listen the first time, but they don't hear you any other time.

They do listen! It's called selective listening. But repetition is the key. You may find yourself saying things two, three,or four times before you get a response. That is just the way it is with kids! But just remember they will have their own some day!

Because very often (especially with mom) they get so use to hearing us telling them what to do and what not to do , that they just tune us out.Our voices just become background noise to them.
Also they learn from an early age they have X amount of times to be told something before the sh** hits the fan so they figure why jump right up and do it if they could easily have 3 more warnings before the yelling starts.

Partly because they are testing limits and partly because most parents dont deal with the child the first time. Instead they give the child several chances before they punish the child.

Young kids often try to bend the rules to see how much they can get away with. That's why routine and appropriate discipline are essential to getting a kid to behave.

Because you don't mean it the first time. Never tell them to do something unless you are prepared to drop what you are doing and follow through. My grandma used to always remind me. Who's the boss?

because they have to be taught that there are consequences for not obeying and they have to be taught that they are expected to respond the first time and that they will be punished then if they dont instead of waiting until the second or third time to punish them
