1. Training - US military marksmanship requirements are very high. Many of the insurgents were given rifles and sent out to fight.
2. Tactics - US military fights as a cohesive force, concentrating firepower on the most dangerous threats first. Insurgents have not bee well coordinated at all.
3. Body Armor - Many of the Insurgent rounds do find a mark on US soldiers, but the Body Armor now worn by nearly all soldiers in the region has reduced injuries dramatically. The Kevlar PSAGT Helmet can deflect an AK-47 round, alas towels do not.
4. Technology - The US Military likes to fight in the dark with high tech night vision and thermal sites. They can accurately hit targets in pitch black situations and close combat battle. Insurgents are firing blind.
5. Did I mention training? Oh yeah, well it is worth mentioning again.
6. Spray and Pray. The AK-47 is a truly remarkable weapon. For the purpose that it was designed for (mass production of a reliable infantry weapon) it has no equal. But, it takes training to take this weapon and make it a precision firearm. Without that training, most insurgents rely on Spray and Pray (Empty magazines on full auto). While it throws allot of lead in the general direction, only the first 1 or two rounds are actually on target. The recoil of continuous firing with rapidly move the aim-point off the target.

These spineless guppies can't stand toe to toe against the Americans, so they use the "spray and pray" method. This is where they duck beneath the top of a wall, point their AK47 over the wall while their head is still below the top of the wall, and let loose with a burst. They rarely hit anything, but if they go back to their spider whole with the same amount of ammo as they left with, they're liable to get their neck chopped, and that's not a good thing because there are no virgins waiting for you when that happens.

The reason why they are not so good at marksmanship is because of poor quality weapons and training. Training has a lot to do with it. Though a weapon is as much important as the training itself. If the person is not proficient at firing a gun that means that their training is inadequate and they need more. Without proper training a person cannot use a gun adequetly.

They watch Gangsta Rap movies for combat tactics.... Seriously they do dumb things like hold guns sideways because they saw it on tv and thing it looks cool. They don't hit anything, but they look cool doing it. Also most lack training in the use of sights or the need to hold the weapon on the shoulder rather than hip shooting. Only those doing sniping or carrying RPG's have decent shooting skills. So that explains why the bad guys prefered weapon today is the IED rather than the gun.

Because it's not their fighting style to take up a prone position and start placing well-aimed rounds on target. Their favorite tactic, (after car and suicide bombs), is to set up an ambush, then start spraying when US troops get close enough. They feel it's a waste of time to take precise aim when you can just fire 30, 40, or 50 rounds in the general direction of the target, and maybe get lucky.

Because they are nothing but a bunch of criminals being paid by terrorists.
It is interesting that the Iraqis are using the term: 'did it like an American' as praise for extreme competence.

They have had no formal military training and in a lot of cases, their weapons are outdated and in poor condition. Most of them are using weapons left over from the Russian-Afghanistan conflicts in the 1970's.
