Absolutely! Marching band is definitely a sport! The hard work that the members of marching bands and color guards do is definitely worth paying attention to. They did a test one time to study just how hard a member of a marching worked. They hooked up all this stuff that measured things like breathing, pulse, heart rate, etc, to a snare player in a drum and bugle corps, and had him go through his 12 minute routine. They learned that his body went through the same changes in that 12 minute routine as an NFL player does in an entire football game. Anyone who says that marching band is not a sport and is for wusses has never paid attention to them. They're ignorant.

No. Marching band is not a sport, although there are marching band competitions. Even at these competitions, participants do not generally refer to what they are doing as a sport.
Marching band IS a very athletic event. Try half walking/half running around a football field while blowing air through a metal tube for 9 minutes! I would be pleased if the several states' Boards of Education would classify marching band as a P.E. course.
Also, marching band is an aesthetic. It is an art. You have to combine music, dance (from the dancers, not the musicians), and choreography in a carefully timed manner using 50 to 200+ people. Also, try accomplishing this with 50 to 200+ 14 to 18 year olds! That IS an art.
No, marching band is not a sport. I hope I never see the day that it becomes one. Hope that this answered your question.

YES. It is a sport. It takes talent and strength. You NEED to watch a drum corps show on YouTube to believe me. Not many people realize how much work and stamina it takes to hold and play an instrument for a 15 minute show while essentially running all over a football field. Marching band isn't a sport just because you have competitions, it's a sport because we spend 15 hours a week practicing out on the field marching until you get the drill and music perfect. Push-ups are NOT the only thing you do, you're required to have immense core strength to get through a show. By the way, I am a hurdler and I have done marching band so I know what I talking about.

Although the marching arts are highly ATHLETIC activities, you get into real danger when trying to classify it as a sport. To be classified as a sport would be to take away the main thing that makes it unique which is MUSIC. People aren't brought to tears by watching a basketball game (unless they get hit in the head or something). Music has the ability to affect emotions at our deepest levels, and what "sport" can say that? Treasure the athleticism of these actitivities, but don't be so quick to call it a "sport."
By the way, Winterguard is known as "The Sport of the Arts." Look at www.wgi.org

Um...I've been in marching band for years and I've never thought that marching band or colorgaurd or percussion were a sport. It's MUSIC people. Jeeze, get off it already. Be lucky that the school lets our geeky little thing go on. Sure we think we're a sport but we're not. And colorgaurd to me is just a big waste of time. They serve no purpose. Our colorgaurd just brings us down. They take away from the band. So, the answer is NO!

I feel it is more music than sport. But marching bands have some pretty elaborate routines, and I think there are marching band competitions.
A little music trivia: The Jimmy Lunceford Orchestra was originally comprised of his former high school marching band students. The routines that made them famous on the bandstand were adapted from their high school marching band routines!

Although they can be competitive, and may take some training and stamina, I wouldn't classify it as a sport. Not saying anything bad about it, but I don't think it would match the common definitiion of "sports". Thats your assignment, think up what you would call it maybe " competitive highly skilled cooridinated marching band"?

Yes. People who criticize it for being "wussy" or "easy" have never done it, have you noticed that? (I haven't either but my brother, who is 42, STILL does drum and bugle corp. And I hate when people judge things that they don't have a clue about!) Dr. Phil did a thing where an uncle who played football kept teasing his niece about band, so Dr. Phil made him do band for a few practices and a show. He barely survived! He doesn't tease his niece anymore because he actually said it was tougher than football.

Definitely. I was in the band for four years and you know what we did more calisthenics, running, and push-ups than the football, soccer, or baseball team did. Our band was like military style, very strict and precise, so anyone who says its a wussy sport needs to experience it for a day, i bet they change their minds!
