I believe Tchaikovsky was the most played composer in the 20th century. But there are different definitions of fame. Some might say the Beatles, some might say N Sync.
In terms of influence on American culture, I would have to say the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix.

whos doing the reputing?
in the world today, we would care more about pop musicians then classical musicians, so i would say one of the beatles (probably Paul, since he was always the poppiest, although most hardcore beatles fans see george or john as the better beatle)
However, if your saying the most reputed musician by anyone ever, it would probably be one of the famous classical musicians you learn about in your 4th grade music class like Mozart.

Do you mean famous? Then I nominate Jimi Hendrix. Or maybe Beethoven, I guess, if you just mean name recognition. I don't know how many can actually identify most of his work.
