Because people are ignorant. They are afraid to educate themselves. Afraid that their parents are liars. Afraid what they have been told their whole lives are lies, and if their whole life is a lie, where would that leave them?
Politics same way, people are afraid of change. They fear anything that will change anything about their own life. but quick to criticize yours.
Hypocrites...every one of them.
They should make you take IQ tests to vote, and join churches. That's where everyone goes wrong. Very few people are smart enough to do what the USA asks their own citizens to do.
Everyone in the USA complains about politicians, but none of them will do anything about it . Like vote life-long politicians out.
Why? because they afraid of change. They would rather complain about it, then get off the couch from watching American Idol.
Americans, are lazy, and undereducated for their own government.

Its a social behavior thing I guess. Everybody has a right to express his/her opinion. But in a live discussion, you get response right away, which eventually turns into some form of verbal attack if the other side disagrees with you. The anonymity behind an on line forum lets you test out your ideas and arguments. Its all a preparation for the next live round you know. I could for example express any idea that takes my fancy on the net, and if someone tries to take me down as a fruit-cake it won't make a difference. There is a very fine line between being frank and inconsiderate. The net allows you to be inconsiderate, with nothing coming back your way. People, that express opinions on the net, generally say the same things up front. It's the wisecracks that find their way in the replies. This would not happen, in a live discussion. So the answer, is indeed fear. Fear of getting kicked in the butt, for being rude.

not really a taboo. People talk about them all the time but they DO cause alot of conflict so people often try to steer clear.
Why do they cause such controversy though? Because human nature won't allow us to admit that others may be right. No matter what you believe in do not believe in, there is always the change that you may be wrong, but we could never admit that.
That being said, since we think we must be right, we feel the need to educate other people so that they believe the same as we do. But the never person will never agree of course and herein lies the endless circle that is religion, and politics is no different.

Religion and politics are the opposite of taboo subjects. A taboo subject would be one that no one would talk about.
In fact, on line or elsewhere, religion and politics are some of the MOST talked about and debated subjects. We normally don't talk much about them in pleasant social situations, because peoples feelings on these subjects are so powerful, that it can strain light social relations (that is ruin a party).
In face-to-face or on-line forums where the intent is to put these things on the table and let strong feelings out, there is often edgy discussion. It can be fun and useful so long as everybody aims for a little consideration. Play nice.

religion and politics are belief systems. Mess with someone's beliefs, and you mess with someone's reality.
Keep in mind that in the real world, most (and I mean most) people don't go out of there way to espouse their opinions of beliefs upon others because of the possible meltdowns of reality which may occur and respect of others that don't necessarily want or need to hear your take on belief. Another words, out in the "real" world your opinion is rarely invited.
On the contrary. Yahoo Answers provides an avenue where your question is inviting opinion. Most questions are asking you to tell me your beliefs. hence, the responses are opinionated.

These topics can cause conflict as they tend to be about a person's dearly held beliefs. These beliefs are about the nature of how the world really is. People dont like to be told that they are wrong about ideas that mean a lot to them. Here people can express their views and/or attack the views of others without fear of recrimination or reprisal. You won't loose your job, alienate your family or friends, or get punched in the lip by airing your thoughts in this place.

When a person profess to be, say, Democrat and Christian he is sating what he believes in. Since he has chosen those two all others are wrong in HIS eyes.
Hiding behind the anonymity that is offered by Y/A is because people are afraid of confrontation and fear that just maybe their beliefs aren't what they profess them to be.
Trust me I know a lot of people that profess Christianity but their life sure doesn't reflect it.

Religion and Politics (which are really both philosophies) go far beyond the brain and dig deep into the human soul.
People are instinctively extremely defensive about their souls and inevitably an argument (confrontation) ensues.

because they are matters human beings have sturdy critiques on, and persons are incapable of respecting one yet another's critiques. because it perpetually leads to arguments, they are taboo for the sake of protecting the peace.
