Stick with a Canon or Nikon and buy Full size lens not the digital verisions for APS sized senors. The better lens will be usable in the future as you skill grows and you out grow the older camera. Buy the best glass you can afford. Don't skimp on the lens. The better lens will only make your camera work better no matter which brand you go with. The "digital" lenses will be worthless in the future when full sized sensors become the norm. So don't invest in them.

Apparently nobody else understands what "manual" means.

A Canon AE-1 is a good buy. It's fairly compact and has a decent light meter. There is a smorgasbord of lenses to choose from. An AE-1 with lens can be purchased for $100 or less.
If you want quality, the Canon A-1 wont let you down. Has many features, is solid, and it's reliable.

I found the Eos Rebel very easy to use. I bought it for my beginner photography class and never had any problems. It is simple to use and the display is easy to understand.

The camera comes in both digital and film, so you can find one that fits your needs.

Good luck in your class.

i'd commence with interpreting your guide and studying a thanks to apply the gentle meter it really is equipped into your viewfinder. once there you'll favor to study which aperture you should use for a wanted result and which shutter speeds you should use for a given result or to freeze action. I propose you purchase a e book said as comprehend-how publicity by Bryan Peterson to get you began. a classification in undemanding images would also be good.
