I personally think that the yogic way of life has benefited me in such a profound manner. I do my self-practice of yoga asanas (postures), meditation and pranayama everyday because I know that I am making positive changes to myself physically, mentally and emotionally.
Ayurvedic medicine (and alternative medicine in general) has worked for me because their treatments feel more natural, and my body responses well to this. Although I do not shun Western or modern medicine, I would have to say that they would be my second option. I would rather heal myself without drugs as much as possible. I also believe that the healing process is not only an external solution, but also an internal one-- which is why meditation is such a powerful practice.
This is just my opinion. I am not saying that what I practice and follow is better than others. Yoga and its philosophy has become a way of life for me. There are many other paths, but we all are essentially walking towards the same destination. It is a matter of finding your own way of life and your own path.

On the other hand, would Jesus approve of the current system, where the children of the poor are passed over, where the sick, the disable, and the elderly fall through the cracks...where our physicians seem to care more than filling their own pocket with cash before they worried about healing the sick? I have to admit, the idea of putting the whole thing in the hands of the government does make me nervous, but I do believe that everyone, regardless of who they are, does have a RIGHT to decent healthcare. I don't like the idea of socialized health care. Perhaps we could pass a law that every physician that wants to practice in the US MUST take a certian number of pro-bono cases. That way, those who can't afford private insurance could still be able to get health care when they need it. I dunno, but there needs to be a solution, and it needs to be soon. I am one of those you seem to think don't matter. I'm on medicaid, basically because I am disabled and cannot afford private health insurance. On the other hand, I know the quality of health care I get, and, as I say, I am not comfortable with putting the whole thing into the loving hands of our government. It is time to stop favoring the wealthy, and give some thought to those less fortunate, especially in these difficult times. People from all over the United States are out of work, looking for jobs...people who thought they were "set for life" are losing their shirts...it's a nightmare. More than ever, people need to realize that there are no garauntees. You'd be surprised at how quickly YOU could wind up being one of those you so casually brush aside as not being as worthy of health care as someone with more bucks. And I gotta tell you...it is VICIOUS at this end of the economic scale...

My experience has been somewhat limited - I have taken yoga classes and been told that I have natural abilities. I once went to a spa for panchakarma, and it was a good experience (although their facility had a fire shortly before my visit, so I didn't get the full experience - but did get a discount!).
I would love to learn more, but I am very "Westernized" so a retreat where I would be immersed in the experience would be ideal. Of course, I'd want something that wasn't just trendy, but where the staff were truly knowledgeable about these studies.

i am not a great student of yoga. however i did enjoy some preliminary lessons. i meditate regularly and find that it is both healing and calming. i believe it has helped me to change my life and focus in a way no other practice could have done for me.
