I have like, none. I plan on joining a couple of clubs next year.. but I can't really get into that whole sports thing, class president thing, school activities etc.. What should I do? I'm a sophomore with mediocre grades and I need to stand out. Any suggestions?

I plan to join APC, Key Club, and Maybe Ecology club next year.. I don't know what else though. Volunteer seems like a good idea, no idea where I can find it though. I'm not really interested in sports, and the golfing team only has guys.

Volunteering and community service are good activities to add to your college application or resume. Try these websites for information on a variety of organizations you may be interested in assisting and to find out more about what you can do to help. You can even find opportunities for assisting "virtually" from the comfort of your home!

I personally like volunteering with the local food bank and with Habitat for Humanity. The SPCA and the community hospital are also good choices.

I'm sure there are many other websites that can help get you started, but I hope these will help. Good luck!

Okay, so what are you into? Are there any clubs for the classes you are taking? FFA, French club, Spanish club, FHA, etc.? Joining a club for a class you're already taking (so long as you like the class) is a great way to stand out. Plus, you get to go on trips and have excused absenses from your classes during those times. I remember one year my FFA chapter went to the State Fair in Jackson, MS. We got to miss a whole day of school and actually go to the fair. It only cost $5 per person, which was used for gas and food. We got to get in for free. Plus you get your picture in the yearbook for every club you join. It's a lot of fun, and some clubs have competitions. You get to travel and compete against other schools. It's really cool.

Colleges are looking for how you can make a difference and contribute to the college experience.

Extracurricular activities do not have to be connected to the school. It can be any kind of:

Community group such as music, theater, historical society, etc.

Volunteer work such as with the humane society, food kitchen, hospital, nursing home, etc.

Church activities such as with the youth groups, choir, Sunday school teacher, camp counselor, etc.

These are only some ideas. Look around, someone out there needs your talents and enthusiasm.

You could find some local organizations to volunteer for. The work would be much more rewarding then just boring school activities plus you could help people that really need it. Colleges look at volunteer work also.

pick something that you will enjoy given your personality.
like the speaking club if you are an extrovert

Or writing / painting if you are an intovert but still want people to notice you.

in sports, pick up stuff like golf which is not as physical as a regular sport, but it will help you a lot socially and career wise too.
a lot of corporate networking if not all is done on the golf course!!

I always prefered the arts myself. You intertested in band, orchestra, choir, theater? Those are always fun extra curricular things.
