lots of papers for house training, food bowls, don't buy the food until you know what his already used to, some toys, training lead and collar, very light weight that he won't feel to much. I'm sure you've heard all the advice about reputable breeder seeing the parents, and being strong enough to walk away, if it doesn't look right, no matter how cute the puppy, if it's a puppy breeding farm, it may have ill health and bad temperament, also find a good vet, for his jabs.

A good tip for house training when he wakes up or has just been fed take him out and you can give him a command like be busy, and when his done a wee or something else you praise him, for being "busy" DON'T over exercise IE games and running after feeding like all of us they need the food to settle, or you could end up with a dog with a twisted stomach and a £1000 vet bill, which might make you think of insurance.

A crate and some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com
What All Good Dogs Should Know - Volhard
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin
Don't Shoot the Dog - Pryor
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
Dog Problems - Benjamin
Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan
Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on TV.

Keep him in a crate at night or whenever you can't supervise him - not to punish him, but the same way you'd use a playpen for a baby.

Good quality dog food - personally I like Nutro - it has no by products and is reasonably priced.

A leash and buckle collar.

A FEW toys to chew on and play with - Nylabones, Gumabones and rubber Kongs are great.

You are so wise to think of this before-hand!
So many families come to claim their puppy without even a leash or collar or harness.. Many of those that do remember, bring the wrong type..even though during conversation I have advised them just exactly what they need.... I guess its like going to the hospital to have a baby....getting so excited that everything is forgotten...lol

I always recommend the step-in harness, as no puppy can escape, yet it is not threatening, so it would be for a stranger to drag the puppy by its neck.... Walmart carries these, as do most pet supplies... If you can't find one, email me and I will tell you how to make one at home. (there are many on eBay, so you can see what I mean)
A light leash..even if it is large breed, do get a light weight leash unless it is an adult..
Have a premium puppy kibble at home. I heartily recommend Canidae, Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, or Wysong. Most pet supplies carry at least one of these kibbles. they are made of all human grade ingredients, so you don't have to wonder what's in the bag...Good nutrition is always your best investment.

Get metal or ceramic bowls. The plastic ones harbor more bacteria, harder to get really clean (daily) and cause canine acne. (dark bumps on chin)
If it is a toy breed and short haired, you will need a sweater.

Get a good home veterinary handbook. Not only will it help in emergencies, but it will let you know whether certain symptoms are something to worry about....I think I have memorized my own..You can get them at most pet supplies or on line, or on eBay.

Bring a small stuffed toy, and hold the puppy with the toy...this will be comforting, especially when you have to leave his side for a moment..
Depending on your vehicle, and the length of the trip, or the size of the puppy, you may need a carrier or kennel.

If you don't already have a home vet handbook, check one out at your library, so you at the very least will understand canine CPR, and basic first aid....and you will need a first aid kit..the books will tell you what should be in it.

Very important...MOST pups will get loose stools when they travel.. Many will get car-sick..Take a roll of paper toweling and zip lock gallon bags...And a covering for your car seats.

Book about caring for pups, book about first aid for dogs, feed bowl, water bowl, puppy food, bed and bedding, puppy crate, toys and teething chews. Anything else can be added later.
The breeder should give a diet and care sheet.
Please take the advice offered in the booklets available from this website; its based on the training methods used for guide dogs. You can't do better.
Also, go to puppy training classes.

Get lots of newspaper for potty training. They have some fancy stuff at the pet stores that cost a fortune and don't work any better than newspaper. Get a water dish and food dish. Get an expandable collar and a leash. Get lots of doggie toys for the puppy to chew on. Puppies are cuttung teeth and if you don't provide them with chew toys they will chew on your stuff. Start teaching and training them from day one and be consistant. Use the same words for every command consistently. Ex: Stay (put your hand on their forehead every time you say it), sit (put your hand on there hind end and lift up there head), no (take away whatever they are doing wrong and replace with something that is okay for them), good boy/girl (always say this and love on them, pat them when they do good). Get puppy chow and give only the amount recommended on package. Do not leave food in bowl constantly until they are at least a year old. By that time they will be used to eating a set amount and will be less likely to over indulge. Keep newspaper at whatever door you will be wanting them to go out to go potty. They will have many accidents on floor, pick them up, say "No" firmly and take them to the newspaper and tell them "go Potty" and "good girl/boy" they may run off at first but keep it up and they will get the idea. After a while they will begin to go only on newspaper then you will need to start taking them outside when you see them go to newspaper. After about a week of this remove newspaper and when they go to the area simply take them outside. You must stay outside with them no matter how long it takes for them to go and when they do give them lots of praise and love. If you don't want them to sleep with you then get them a doggie bed or carrier for them. They may cry and whine a lot the first few nights but if you put them in the same place with a small blanket or soft stuffed animal they will become comfortable with it and begin to prefer to sleep there. Animals can be trained to do just about anything if you are patient and consistent. Good Luck.

We are animal lovers. You need a good protein puppy food. Puppy crunchies. I always have crunchy food available. Fresh water. Chew toys. My dogs like "greenies". LET A PUPPY SLEEP. Puppies like all babies need their sleep. Wee, wee pads unless you are home all the time to take him out to train him. He will prefer to go outside if taken out frequently. We have a chihuahua and he has a bed in each room of the house because he likes to be near someone. But then he sleeps with us. NEVER spank them. A firm voice to discipline. They will learn. NEVER rub their noses in their pee or poop. That's just plain stupid. Again, a firm voice will teach them that's not a good thing to do. If you catch them going potty, say NO and run with them outside. Then give them praise for going outside. If he is to go places with you get him used to the car by taking short trips with you. Groom him with a brush, good shampoo, keep nails clipped and regular vet visits and vaccinations. HEART WORM PILLS. I don't know about other states but in Texas that is a necessity because of the mosquitos. Good flea preventative. They sell pills and drops at the Vets office that work great. Sounds like a lot but necessary for good health and happy animals. Responsibility of a pet owner. Puppies are adorable. All babies are adorable. But remember they grow up. This is a big decision. Like a child. Play and have fun. Animals are wonderful. Just ask my 4 dogs, 4 cats, birds, fish, pig, duck and iguana. Too much information? Sorry but I am a firm believer in taking responsibilty when you purchase a pet.

When you collect your puppy make sure you ask these questions:
When was he last wormed
Has he had any flea treatment
What food is he/she eating and how many times a day is he being fed.

Then you need to buy
Puppy training mats (for housetraining)
Bowls
Lead and collar
Wormer
Flea spray
Brand of food puppy is used to
toys
bed and blanket
brush

Good luck, hope you have lots of fun with your pup.

Argos do some reasonably priced puppy starter kits. these and a few stuffed toys should keep him going untill you get to know what your puppy likes. Ask the breeder what the puppy likes

you want each little thing the domestic dog will favor way in strengthen. domestic dog mattress, bite toys, a similar domestic dog nutrition the breeder is employing, and some books on a thanks to coach. Do as a lot analyze on the breed as accessible. even as picking out a domestic dog do not do it by how amazing that is. each from time to time the ugliest domestic dog ends as a lot as be the most alluring and visa-versa. once you get there do not purely fiddling with them. Watch them. How they play, eat, etc. you want a dogs that performs actively with this is siblings yet would not dominate them. A impartial dogs. Now, p.c.. it up. Does it swirm to escape frantically or inspect you want, "who're you? favor to play?" you do not favor one which purely sits limp on your lap or it really is so hyper this is biting your chin and scratching your fingers. also, inspect how they walk. assume some wabblyness yet nevertheless incredibly good stability. this is knees might want to be immediately, no longer became in or out. try this try on all of them. Ask in case you could take it to a diverse room. Does it commence whinning frantically? Is it scared faraway from this is siblings or does it take about 5-10 min earlier it realizes they're lengthy gone? this is what you want. good success
