I saw one once that had a Chevrolet V-8 for a powerplant. It was quite authentic looking except that it was small. Where do you find such kits?

Legendary Aircraft produces a scaled-down kitplane version of the P-51D based on the Fighter Escort Wings (F.E.W.) Mustang kitplane that was designed in the late 1980's early 90's. It's powered by a Chevy V-8.

Another very promising Mustang replica was the Thunder Mustang which is powered by a Falconer V-12 engine. Sadly, the company went under, but a few Thunder Mustangs were built and some of those race at Reno.

High Performance Aircraft Ltd. has taken on what used to be known as the Stewart S-51D Mustang replica kitplane, an all aluminium, V-8 powered design that has been around for several years. Some have been built, but I don't really know the current status of the project as a whole.

The late French designer, Marcel Jurca, developed plans for the MJ-7 and MJ-77 Mustang replica kitplanes that I believe were all-wood construction and powered by a range of engines like the six-cylinder Ranger inline for the smaller MJ-7, and the V-8's for the MJ-7 Mustang replica. I know that there used to be a firm based out of Edmonton. Alberta that offered his plans, but I don't know if it's still in business. Interestingly, Jurca also produced plans for a 100% full-scale, V-12 Allison powered Spitfire replica.

There are a couple of firms that offer "ultralight" renditions of the Mustang. One is Loehle Aircraft that produces the Rotax powered, all wood and fabric Loehle-5151, and Titan Aircraft, which produces the Titan T-51, an all-metal, light weight P-51 replica.

I'd also suggest you get in touch with the Experimental Aircraft Association - EAA; they could also give you a rundown on replica fighter kitplanes like the P-51, as could the Replica Fighters Association. Kitplanes Magazine also did a survey of P-51 kit manufacturers some years ago, but as some companies have changed hands or gone out of business, that may noy be much help to you.

Hope this answers your question.

There is at least one magazine specializing in kit planes that you could find at Borders or the like. Do a search for the EAA Experimental Aircraft association. This is right up their ally they can link you to the closest chapter in your area for all the information you will need.
