Dear Uncle Ezra,
I have read the archives and was able to get some answers on Grad Students dating Faculty. My question is this: How much trouble can one get in dating a professor in the same department, that does not serve in anyway to this person as a teacher, advisor or on committee, if the relationship is kept secret? Do you have to disclose in this case? Can you even date?

Thanks,

Dear Needing Answers,
I commend you for asking: The prognosis for any relationship improves when individuals enter it well-informed. Yet I encourage you to concern yourself not only with rules, but with potentially setting yourself up for a painful or professionally disruptive condition, even if the relationship continues to develop into your most ideal vision of it. For instance, in the case that you break up, you'll still have to see this professor regularly, and to resist any other faculty advice to get involved in academic areas that overlap with his or hers, which would get you into a power hierarchy. In the case that you stay together, you'll want a job near your partner, which will require tremendous luck or grace on the part of the department. One of you will be uprooted, or take a lesser job, or make major commutes, and these sacrifices can strain the best of relationships. Such concerns are the basis upon which the rules are built.
The rules say that if there is no power hierarchy involved whatsoever, the professor can go ahead and initiate a romantic relationship with a student. As a student, you can date whomever you want without sanctions. The sanctions are on the behavior of the professor. Of course the presence of power hierarchy will be judged by others after the fact should a problem arise, and things can get out of your control very fast.
There's a good reason for this, and it has to do with the way power works in the professional world. You'll want to proceed only if you have understood possible pitfalls and if long-term love is the clear goal here, on both your parts.
Uncle Ezra

It's not Mary K case but it sure is yours now and being that you gave no details I assume it cant be anything good so when you decide to be a teacher and focus on teaching children then you wont get on the net asking for answer's to a question with no information. What your going through now is a guilt trip and you should because GOD don't like ugly so don't mess with his babies. PS ... The only ones who know the real truth is that poor child you and GOD...........Think about that

You should be better friends with his parents then you are with him. Afterall, he is a MINOR. When you are with the FAMILY the next time, apologize to the KID and be done with it. He should respect you for apologizing, but you certainly don't need his approval. If the parents respect you, then that's all that really matters. You don't need to be "friends" with everybody.

If nothing happened, you should be fine. Continue to be friends. I am actually very close to one of my high school teachers, but we didn't do anything... we just got along very well.
