well, personally i just love giving my daughter, she's now 21) meaningful gifts especially on those mile stone birthdays. i think for a first birthday give her a fun toy, but also get her a silver charm bracelett that on every birthday you buy a special charm for. i did this on my daughters 19th(got a late start) and i got her a doggie charm to signify her first dog, a cellphone charm, well you can guess why on that one, a diamond ring charm to signify the first ring she was ever given by a boyfirend, a cap for her graduation, an eifel tower charm becaue we stayed at the paris hotel in vegas for her 18th b-day(she was born dec. 31st) a champagne bottle and glass charm for her 21st, an angel because my husband calls her angel, and so on. you can be collecting this bracelett and when she turns atleast 13 give it to her, but keep adding to it untill she is atleast 21. i also plan on buying a pink or blue baby boot charm for my daughter when she has her first baby. each charm she will be able to look back on as a special memory and have a story to go with each charm. i also buy my daughter an angel christmas ornament every year. she loves to get them all out and hang them on the tree. for my son i do snowman ornaments.

I started my daughters 1st b-day gift when she was born.. I started a week by week scrap book/ photo album. I'm sure she wont appreciate it on her 1st birthday but when she gets older I think she will be very grateful. But I would definitely get her something meaningful that she can have forever... she wont know the difference if you don't give her a toy!

At one, she won't remember anything about the day, let alone the toys or other gifts she gets. So, take lots of pictures of your daughter, on her birthday, and any day to document for her, her youth. Then, along with her baby book - keep up with the documentation of her life.
Sure, she won't "appreciate" something like that for a long time, but when she's 20 will she really appreciate the toy she got when she was 1? Probably not - but a good photo documentation of her life will be priceless.
And the other thing she will cherish forever is the time you spend with her. The closeness that comes from giving time to her cannot come from giving anything else but yourself. Teens and older children do not gain respect for their parents overnight - it comes from the little things you do with them (including listening to them - when they are older), the time you spend with them from the beginning.
Traditions are also nice - they, too, build memories that are cherished for a lifetime.
Give her a kiss on the top of her sweet little head for me and CHERISH every moment with her - she will grow up WAY too fast.

Well, from a former ECE teacher's point of view, you shouldn't get carried away with all the "top 5 baby trends" or any of those "toy fairs", because all they do is claim that a toy that was originally meant for older children (like preschoolers or even schoolchildren) is developmentally appropriate for an infant. I say get her something she'd actually play with: a box. Yes, I may sound like an idiot, but a box (with staples and other hazards removed, of course!) is probably going to be her favorite toy during her baby years! It allows her to hide in it, crawl around in it, and if the box is big, she can explore its many nooks and crannies, helping her develop gross and fine motor skills and fosters her natural sense of discovery! They're also easy on your pocketbook: you can get them free down at the Safeway or other supermarkets, and you can recycle them once she outgrows them! So, get her a big box, remove all the staples and other hazardous things, put it in her room, and let the good times roll!

at a year simple toys are the greatest we got my daughter lots of stuff for her 1st bday but the only thing she still plays with at 2 1/2 are the big blocks they have so many different things they can be used for over the years colors sorting by size and just building things she still loves them she also really loved her leap frog learning table but in the end it is your time she will appreciate the most

Start a tradition.
Mine was born on Christmas Eve so I started giving her angels. She is now 17 and has a huge collection: paintings figures, dolls...all kinds of stuff. She loves it and I think that it will always mean a lot to her.
I got the idea from an 80 year old lady whose dad gave her dolls. She put them up every Christmas.

Go to a Build-A-Bear store and make her a special animal that she can carry around. You can go back when she's older and she can pick out clothes and accessories for the animal. It's really fun and you can tell her the animal has a special heart inside with a special wish in it just for her. You get to put the little plush heart inside before they sew them up, it's really sweet. Good luck!

A one year old baby may have many toys, cookies, dresses or any thing else already before her birthday.
So give him a very special gift...
A COMMITMENT TO MAKE HIM PIONEER ON THIS EARTH
She will realize it and will be thankful to you in your age.
