My sister and I are starting a daycare and I was wondering how many children are you allowed to have and for what age groups? I'm in Ontario.. I'm not sure if this varies from place to place. And does this number include your own children?

Where I live it's 5 children to one adult, with only one child under the age of 1. That is without a day care license. I think the number goes up to 10 children per adult, but I can't imagine watching 10 toddlers on my own. I have a day care in my home and I keep 5 kids at one time. I also know that in licensed day care facilities, the adult to child ratio changes for different ages. For infants it's 1 to 4, for toddlers 1-6 and for children over 2 maybe 3 is 1-10. Do a lot of research before you start. Good luck, send me an email if you like, I would love to help out if I can, give you guys some ideas about what has worked for me.

If it is a licensed facility the numbers will be higher than if not. It all depends on the age of the children and your children would count towards that number. I know here in the US the numbers are 5 total per person at your home without a license, 5 infants per person in a licensed facility 7 one year olds, 13 two year olds, BUT the numbers go by the YOUNGEST age of the child in that room. So if you have one infant 2 toddlers and 2 preschool aged children you would be fine because you have a total of five children for that teacher. You should be able to go online to your local social services website and get all that information.

The number of children depends on the laws of your state. As a rule most states say 5:1 ratio , so with 2 adults present at all times you may have a total of 10 children at any given time. This includes your own children not in addition to your own children.
In addition to the 5:1 ratio many states have another requirment about the # of children that can be below the age of 24 months. For example with 2 adults you can have 10 kids (including your own) but only 4 total may be below the age of 2 years.
Also you can look into having the cost of feeding the children subsidized in many states. The best way to be sure you are meeting all the requirments as well as taking advantage of any resources which may help you is to contact your state department of health and human resources for information.

In Ohio, six kids per care giver. Only three can be under 36 mo. Yes, your own children count, through what age, i am not sure. I am thinking that it is 12.

it's 5 Kids per one adult here where I live. Don't know if that includes your own kids or not, I would think it would.
