I think the best choice for most dogs would be a blend of inside and outside. The dog's preferences and the weather should be considered too.
An "inside" dog will become a better companion. an "outside" dog will grow more aggressive, and thus be a better 'guard'.

An inside dog would be a dog mainly bred for companionship such as a Boston terrior. Outside dogs are usually larger dogs, hunting dogs, spaniels, colleys. All dogs can be raised with a little of both. I have 3 dogs, a boston terrior, a Wymerrainer, and a mutt (part cocker spaniel and part shephard) They are in and out all the time. We have 12 acres for them to play on. They know when they are inside it is "quiet time" and outside it is play time.

Lots of dogs have different attitudes to being outside/inside. I know that my chocolate lab loves to be outside all the time no matter what the weather while my cairn terrior loves to go on walks, but would rather be inside during stormy weather. Daisy loves being outside to soak up the sun while Scout loves to run around in the rain!

Huh? Dogs are social, so a dog left out on its own isnt getting all the interaction it needs to be a healthy happy creature, likewise a dog thats inside all the time doesnt get to interact in nature which is what a dog is made to do.
I dont think i get the question

A dog should never be an "outside" dog. Dogs deserve better than to live their entire lives outside.

Inside! Dogs are pack animals and want to be with their family. I've seen too many outdoor dogs get neglected. It's the whole out of sight out of mind thing. Please keep your dog inside with you...they will be much happier and relaxed. Behavior problems due to boredom and lack of socialization are also mostly avoided when you have an indoor dog. When you are outside, then take them with you.

Keeping dogs outside all of the time is cruel, especially when there is weather extremes and temperature extremes. I believe that dogs should be in the house when not outside to relieve themselves.

Well, my dog said he would rather be inside (and he is). He doesn't really like going outside (too hot). Now if I could only toilet train him......
