Have contract pending to work in Florida for 1 year. Do I need to get a Florida driver's licence? Also curious about auto registration - I may have my CA car shipped to Florida in order to get around - How long before I would need Florida licence plates?

If your home base is still in California, then you can keep your CA driver's license and registration. I've spent years consulting out of state, and never changed my home base from New Jersey. Before I bought a house in NJ, I used my mother's home in Florida as my base for many years, since there was no state income tax.

What does make a difference is who your employer is for the contract. If it's your own CA based company, or another CA based consulting company, you're fine. If they're based in another state except Florida, again, you should be fine. If the consulting firm is based in FL, then it gets a bit grey. Technically, you're working for a FL company, so you should move your DL/car to FL. However, as long as you can still show an active CA residence, you shouldn't have a problem.

What's most important is checking with your car insurance company and ensure that they'll cover you for an extended period outside CA. I've never had a problem, but it always pays to check.

You Have 30 Days
Florida law requires that you get a Florida drivers license within 30 days of becoming a resident of Florida. You are a resident if you do one of the following:
Enroll your children in a Florida public school
Accept employment
File for a homestead exemption
Reside in Florida for more than six consecutive months

so i suppose that if you are going to be there for more than 6 months you have to get everything changed.

now for a story. i was interviewing with a sales company in MD. it was a new office so they had trainers from out of state. basically, they spend about 6 months to a year training people in new offices all over the country. anyway, they simply ignore those laws. after their time is up, they move on. imagine having to spend the money to change licenses, reregister their cars, and update insurance. it's not like anyone knows any different. police usually can care less because it's not like you're staying there permanently.

If you're on contract, and your permanent home address is California, then you don't need to get a Florida License. You have a temporary address for Florida, your permanent one is somewhere else. The same goes for your registration....you can have your mail forwarded to you in Florida, and buy your tag through the mail from California. You're only going to be there a year, so you don't need to do either in Florida.

And my suggestion to save money shipping the car, would be to drive the distance. I did that with my daughter, when she shipped her SUV from Hawaii...I flew to LA, and she flew from HI and met me there, we picked up her car that afternoon and drove back to Jacksonville FL. It took us 5 days, spending 4 nights in hotels along the way, and saved us about 1500 dollars! Interesting trip too!

well every state has usually a ten day law to get new tags in that state, however i lived in florida for ten years, and you have to remember people from all over the country have homes there, florida is the only state where you can have dual residency with another state, so you don't have to worry about getting your license in florida and if you are compelled to do so its only 36 dollars for a new tag and you can just walk right in and get your license, you don't need to take a test or anything like that, florida is real easy when it comes to things like that, you should tell me where you're going, i can probably tell you all the cool places to go to.

As long as ur working u should be fine. Theres alot of ppl. that pass through Alabama and have another states lic. As long as u don't permanently live here ur fine. Check with the FL. DMV and ask them but, I don't think they would require u to change it.

As long as you are not moving to FL to be permanent resident, you don't need to change your ID or tag. IF you decide you want to become a permanent resident here, you have 10 days to change your ID and tag over.
