For the same reason why most people in Singapore don't know where Houston TX is. as an example.
It is a big world and Singapore is small with nothing going on there to make one care where it is.
If it was compared to a city in the USA it would be called a town.
Most people in the USA don't know where a lot of towns are within their own county/ region. but that is true of other people around the world in their region.
It would be disturbing if most people over the age of 15 in the USA didn't know where Iraq was. Simple as that.

Well that's an easy one. Americans aren't very good at geography, if it doesn't involve America.
Look at the answers so far...
- It's a speck with no significance to Americans.
Everywhere has some significance. There is no doubt that everbody uses something made in Singapore every day. Add to that Singapore's population is about 5 million. Yeah, sure that's a ?!@ speck.
- that's where good looking women come from
Isn't that a good answer to your question. I'd hate to ask this guy for directions

Most American don't know where the majority of countries fall! they are only interested in USA, in English language,in USA history, they don't have general knowledge about other cultures and nations.
i don t want to offend anybody, but this is the case of the majority.
An American guy asked once a person coming from abroad:
-where are u from?
-i'm from germany
-oh! but you don't look like an asian !!!
another guy asked a French tourist :
-how you came to USA?
-by plane.
-why u didn't use a car?!
This is how they know geography, no offense to anybody.

Because the school systems in the USA feel that geography
is a throw away subject that has no value.
They'd rather design their curriculum around important things like
sex education for seven year olds.
And the ever evolving family paradigm, you know something a seven year old can appreciate

I do.
Most Americans were not taught a lot about Asia in school.
Probably a fall-out from the war with Japan and the fact that China was so large and closed to our country for years.

Most Americans can't tell you where any place is--if it is farther than 50 miles from their house.
Unless they know some one there or have been there.
