If you are otherwise healthy, it could be something as simple as the fact that your feet alot of the day.
If you have heart or kidney problems it could be that you need to watch your sodium intake.
If you are pregnant, in the later months of pregnancy, SOME swelling in the legs is common. As long as your blood presure is ok - again, it's common and may be helped by resting with your feet up, and sleeping on your left side. BUT, if you ARE pregnant, and having ANY health problems - CHECK WITH YOUR OB! Not only is your health a concern - so is the health of your baby.
BUT, even if you're otherwise healthy, and you are being bothered by swelling in your legs, CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR!!
You have given such limited information. How old are you, male/female...........it is NOT POSSIBLE to give you any good, usable information based on such limited info.
You have NO idea what the source of the information you get from people here is, and isn't your health worth finding out the answer for sure?
Please check with your health care provider.

This is what it sounds like but you need to consult a doctor soon as you can my legs to contain water and I'm under the doctors care...DVT they say its from traveling setting in one spot to long mine started when I played on the computer allot since I have been walking my legs [water] have went down but this is really and I mean really something to be looked at by doctors to determining because of the many things which could be causing it...May you know I'm not a doctor just someone that hurts with swollen legs. You do not want to take a "fuild meds" without your doctors Okay! it takes the possisuim out of your body. I hurt I know your pain but don't panic stay calm because like I said it may be minor to just exercising.

What is DVT?

Deep vein thrombosis, commonly referred to as DVT, is a disease of the circulatory system.
DVT occurs when a clot forms in one of the "deep veins" - often in the lower limbs - and this lodges, blocking the blood flow.

It mainly affects people who are unable to exercise properly such as those who have just had an operation, or those confined to a plane, car or bus.

How do I know if I have got it?

Sometimes there are no symptoms at all. But there can be pain or tenderness in the leg or sudden swelling. There may also be pain on flexing the foot; chest pains or a cough.
Anyone suffering these symptoms after a period of inactivity should contact their doctor.

Fluid retention of the lower extremeties can have many causes. Periferal artery disease...valves deteriorating and fluid is unable to recirculate properly. CHF...Congestive heart failure...fluid pools in lower extremities due to heart not being able to pump the fluids thru the body properly...eventualy fluid will build up and even fill up lungs and heart will stop. In pregnancy it can be due to fetus increasing size and pressure on vessels in pelvis slowing proper circulation in and out of lower extremeties. Increased use of Salt/ Sodium can cause you to retain fluid. Kidney disfunctions can cause you to retain fluid. If this is a continuing problem you really need to see your Doctor for the true cause and get the proper treatment for it because it is not normal. Not all swelling in the lower extremeties is fluid. If you can push your finger down on your anterior lower extremety and an indention remains it is fluid, if no indention remains it is just swollen and can be a whole different reason.

Heart failure is a common cause. Start panicking NOW.

as your heart beats slower or at a lower pressure, less fluid passes through the kidneys to be processed so the forces of gravity gave your ankles that unsightly outsize appearance.

diuretics "water tablets" normall do the trick

Pease see the webpage for more details on Heart failure and Hypothyroidism. In both cases, swelling of the feet will occur. Take Electrocardiograph (ECG) and consult the doctor.

It usually means you're using too much salt. If you have a salty taste (I know I do) use NoSalt. Also try to elevate your feet (above the level of your heart) to take away some of the swelling. Hope this helps.

i would say that you are eating too much dry foods and not intaking enough fluids - your body retains water when it isnt getting enough. Increase your fluid intake and your body retains less. Strange but true.
