I had always heard this as you don't know sh*t from shine, maybe shinola is a shoe polish but it makes less sense to me that way.
I'd love to stay but gotta go to the brain repair unit for servicing now

Shinola is a brand of wax shoe polish available in the early- to mid-20th century. Its immortality in colloquial English comes from its being a dark, pasty, semisolid substance.

Shinola- a new cereal from GM that was only released four days ago- made from dried shins of leprechaun's.
