If you like Jack, try Evan Williams Black Label. Do a blind taste test. Have a friend pour 2 shot glasses without telling you which is which.
Have some crackers in between tastes. I think you will be very surprised that Evan Williams tastes like Jack without the heavy sticker price. Or, try Makers Mark, it is very smooth and has been mistaken for Cognac in blind tastings.

From the answers already posted, I feel qualified to make my comment.
For Bourbon-our answer to the necatar of the gods=scotch whiskey; there are several really good brands out there. My preference is marketed and bottled by Ancient Age out of Bardstown KY named "ELIGAH CRAIG" a 12 year old sour mash that is difficult to locate except in its limited market area of the deep south-GA, FLA, Al, TN and KY. Maker's Mark is a close second as well as the other brands mentioned.

Hopefully, The folks that recommended corn squeezin's or moonshine know the makers of the brew as there is a lot of bad as apposed to a little good. Of all the home made distilled products there is nothing to approach the taste of a really good peach or apple brandy, going around 120 to 140 proof. One glass and you're in heaven.

As for Scotch or Irish, everything mentioned thus far has its own merits. I cannot find fault with any suggested although I do have a bottle of The MACALLANS at 24 years old and 59% in my desk decanter and it is as smooth as a baby's butt.

For those of you folks who read this and might like to visit a working still, I suggest you riding the "Bourbon Trail" through Kentucky. A pleasent drive, see wonderful things and visit all the operating stills. Listed on the internet.

The "Malt Whiskey Trail" thru Scotland is lovely anytime of the year and is well worth the cost to make the journey. Where else can you purchase a bottle of THE MaCALLANs for 25 pounds that goes 24 yearls old and 59%? ALSO VISIT the Malt Whiskey Society while in Edinborough

Be Careful out there

Almost all the whiskey you will find in good ole kentucky are gonna be the best if price is not an isuue....knobb creek. if it is......makers is a little cheaper. I recently found this stuff called old whiskey river that came with a willie nelson cd and a guitar pick and it was exceptionally smooth get that if you can find it i think it may be my new fav. and for the all that it was 25 bucks.

I use to drink Old Overholt rye. A whiskey salesman once told me that most whiskeys with a rye base are smooth. Wm. Penn was a very low priced brand, but because of it's rye base, it was easy going down. Alas though, it' s pretty hard to find rye on the shelves now days.

The only true and best whiskey is moon shine that will burn a beautiful blue flame when it is set on fire.

Will have some over the holiday with some friends when they come over.
