As a minimum, it is recommeded, generally speaking, that a human being have at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep. However, more specifically, it is recommended that the following amounts be used.

Babies — 15 hrs
Grade School — 9-13 hrs
Teenagers — 8-10 hrs
Adult — 7-8.5 hrs

Infants will sleep in their own time, but its usually around 15hrs a day. Children need a full 8 hours of sleep, sometimes more is better especially for hyperactive children. Teens to adults require the same amount. since most people sleep in incraments of 3 hours (stage1 to stage 3(REM sleep)) even If I were to sleep for 9 hours, I would sleep for three 3hour incraments. the elderly are like children, the more they sleep the better. 10 hours is best.

I think that teens and babies need the most sleep as their bodies are going through a ton of changes.

8 hours has always been a good average.
However, I am 43 now, and seem to only require about 4 to 6 hours.

There are no general rules for that. It all depends on life style and the make-up of the person.
