Actually that doesn't work.. marry a bum. The American citizen that you marry has to file what is called a petition. These take about 2 years and depending on whether or not you came here legally before marrying, decides if you get to stay in the USA while you wait for the petition to be approved.
Also, with the petition, the spouse has to prove he/she is a viable member of society. For example, he/she can't be dog poor living on welfare.

You can become an American by getting a visa to come here and work. You have other ways to become a citizen besides marrying an American. Marrying however, might be the quickest way, as the country has tighted its immigration laws a lot since 911.
My advice is, don't stop trying.

Unless of course you are an illegal, and only from Latin America, because thats a huge voting group waiting to happen.
If you have the means, owning property can help as well.
My best friend is from Germany, educated, owns a business that employs 5 Americans, and has been here for almost 20 years.
But every few years, she has to fight and scramble to stay here.
Now if she only had sneaked across the Arizona desert, and was hanging drywall, and refused to speak anything but Spanish, she'd be set right now!
Believe me Karen, ther are a lot of Americans that are mad about this as well. Good luck.

You do not have to marry an american citizen to become a citizen.
You have to live in this country for a consecutive 5 years and then you are eligible to apply for citizenship.
The only difference being married to an american makes , is, you can apply for citizenship after 3 years instead of 5.

NEWSFLASH: Marrying an American does NOT make you an American citizen. Trust me, I married one. I still have to go through the whole process. It might make it a bit easier, but I don't see it. I even gave birth to an American citizen. I am still just a "Resident Alien" according to my green card and I've been here 17 yrs. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!
Thank you SLICK, you are so right. They send you a book of 100 questions, you have to learn them all, but they'll only ask you about three in a verbal interview. You just don't know which ones.

Anyone can become an American citizen if they want to. Educate yourself on the national laws & become informed. Attend a citizenship class at your local college. Our citizenship laws are legal & fair to everyone. You do not have to marry an American citizen, that is not a requirement.

First off the marriage has to be legitimate. (I'm qualified to answer this because I am married to an immigrant) Second, you can make it on your own. I know a few of my wife's friends how have become citizens without the benefit of marriage to a citizen. I would recommend you consulting with an attorney.

It is because too many people want to come and we subsidize services for the poor, so we limit the number. Then we expand it to cover spouses of our citizens. It is an exception to the overall limit.
The result may be that is the easiest way to do it, but that isn't the purpose for the exemption.

There are numerous paths to becoming a US citizen. However, priority is given to spouses of citizens, as one might expect. At the same time, it does create a huge market for fraudulent marriages.

doctors and teachers are always welcome anywhere. Most countries have regulations and some won't let you in at all. They often check to make sure that you are not just marrying for citizenship. You have to know random questions about them and have pictures of you two in a fond embrace. They may ask questions on why a successful individual wants to marry a bum on welfare. There are plenty of normal guys willing to marry you though.
