Oh congratulations, that is so wonderful.
Your neice will be on the move either now or some time very soon so you could do with a big playmat that she can have a selection of toys on to play with, some toys such as soft balls that she can crawl after.
One thing I would recommend as well is some small plastic pots that can go in the freezer and microwave... that way you can prepare food and split it into portions and freeze it for her. While on the subject of food, try an Annabel Karmel Baby & Toddler cookbook, these are great.
You will also need stair gates, one for the bottom of the stairs and one for the top, and one for any other doorway that you may want to block off (like a door to the garden if you are in and out in the summer).
You may want to consider a playpen for those times you need to leave both babies unattended (eg toilet visits or answering the door).
You will most definitely need a car seat.
A double stroller. Mothercare do a good one for a reasonable price.
A high chair.
Good luck with this, I have a lot of respect for you.

I'm so pleased you decided to go ahead with it. Congratulations and I hope everything goes okay for the birth as well.
As to what you will need for your niece...Most important will be nappies and formula milk. It is unlikely she would have been breastfeeding. She will probably have clothes already so that's one thing you won't have to buy. Toys are important for stimulation. Cloth books and rattles would be good. Make sure there's nothing can come off in her mouth. Babies at that age love to chew everything. A high chair will be needed and it means you can keep an eye on her without having to worry. You will need a changing mat and a rubber mat for in the bath. These are things you will need with your own baby too.
I'm sure you know about all these things. I suggest you go to somewhere like Babies R Us or Kiddicare and just get everything from there!
I wish you all the luck. If you happen to live anywhere near Peterborough I'll come and babysit for you! I think that would be a bit of a coincidence though!

If only there were more people like you guys in the world. She'll need lots and lots and LOTS of nappies. Toys (they normally have ages on them). Also lots of bibs because she'll be having some baby food and making a mess all over her clothes. Make sure you're house is child proof - no little things lying all over the things that can get into mouths, not sharp corners where heads can get cut and no plugs that don't have protective covers on so the little fingers don't get stuck in.
I know it's exciting but my baby is now 9 months and they really are a hand full - and you're going to have two!! So expect that things will be rough and that you'll feel exhausted and overwhelmed at times. You'll need help so think about getting a maid or a family member to help you out especially if you're going to breast feed. Good luck.

I would like to say congratulations and if you ever have time to read this now you should check out the philandteds website it has a really cool pram for two its called the e3. I have three children under 5 so can appreciate how hard your decision was but I would like to say I think you have made a great choice and the love and joy you get back from both children will be more than enough of a reward.

Congratulations...both for your baby & adopting your niece....you are all very lucky to have each other......
in answer to their needs.....take advantage of your stay in the hospital and ask the nurses/midwives what both your babies might need....feeding bottles (they will probably have different milk formula...try color coding so you wont get confused as to which baby a feeding bottle belongs to....)
if you are unsure of what to get your niece or newborn baby dont hesitate to ask the midwives/nurses in the hospital your wife is in.....stores that specializes in baby & mother products will also be helpful (to some extent)....
baby clothes (they grow VERY fast so dont buy too many) (always check the clothes including socks, caps, etc inside and out before putting them on the baby)
6 months old babies are a bit active....they can roll over so careful about putting her on bed and turning your back - she might end up on the floor.......she can most probably support her head & neck and is able to sit up on your lap with you just holding her body (be carefule as this might not be the case).....try talking to her & hopefully she's a talker and will be "talking" to you in return.....give yourself time by try to get to know each other and eventually you'll learn what both babies will need (lots of love Im sure)...and it sounds like your a father capable of giving lots of love to two baby daughters....gosh! how exciting!
