I get awful fever blisters and cold sores, and usually use chap-stick and carmex for them. I also have very senstitive skin. I got one about a week ago though, and it was completely awful. My mom got me some abreva, and it seemed to work beautifully--the swelling went down and there was no more pain. Now, however, I have a nasty rash on the bottom right side of my face, and my lips are inflamed again and taste like blood. The abreva stopped working. What is this and what should I do?

Also--I have never had sex (or oral sex). Could it be Herpes Simplex 1 if I haven't done anything to get it?

I invest in the company that made docosonol, the active ingredient in Abreva.

Just keep taking it. Use it more often if need be and a bit more of it. You can also take prescription Acyclovir at the same time. Although, personally I'd stick with topical stuff rather than douse my whole body if I don't have to, but I know Acyclovir works and you can use them at the same time.

Sounds to me that there is something else going on here than just your common cold sores. Most people do not know that cold sores are normally caused from a virus that is cousin to the Herpes virus. If you have been sexually active even just once in your life then you need to go to the doctor to be tested for the disease. I hope that you see a doctor soon because of the fact that I don't believe that you cold sore problem is all that common.

Go to the doctor. It sounds like you have tried all of the over the counter methods, which haven't helped...

Other tips to prevent sores:
* Don't drink after other people--share eating/drinking utensils.
* Wash your hands often. And keep hands away from the face in between washes.

I work around a lot of germs (and dust) sometimes, so I take care in washing and sanitizing my hands. Any little thing could irritate my skin. But your issue sound more serious since it keeps occurring, very often...

I f you can get to a dermatologist that would be a good idea.You sound like you have more then a cold sore and are also allergic to the abreva as well.

Go to a dermatoligist as soon as you can. Also, at home you could try an otc anti-histamine like benedryl if you aren't allergic to it. Try aveeno cream or powder mixed with a little water to make a salve. Or try ground up oatmeal & a little water as a salve for your rash.
