I got home about an hour ago after being gone for a few hours. I got home to find my two cats--mother and daughter--yowling and hissing at each other. This is weird, because they're basically best friends. The only other time I've seen this happen is when I took the kitten to the vet to have her spayed, and when I brought her home, the mother started hissing at her because she thought the kitten was a foreign cat--the kitten still had iodine on her belly from the surgery, so she didn't smell like she did before the surgery. After a few days of hissing, growling and spitting at each other (first the mother, then the daughter), they were back to acting like friends. But I don't know what could've happened in the past few hours that now has both of them acting like this. Since they've both been spayed, it wouldn't be hormonal. Any other cat lovers have a clue what the deal might be?

The kitten is 14 months old and the mother is probably about 3 years old.

It's rather warm in my apartment (only a window AC unit) so I've put water bowls in different places for both of them--actually, a water bowl for the mother and the toilet lid is up for the kitten. As weird as it sounds, she loves drinking from the toilet.

Your cats are trying to settle the dominance situation. Mama cat naturally thinks that she must be the boss; but if daughter cat is a natural leader, she won't accept mama cat's dictum without a fight. Since they are females, the fights will be hissing and caterwauling... though it could get physical. They will settle the dominance issue eventually; but to help them along, make sure that each cat knows that there is enough FOOD and space for the both of them. Don't worry.

Maybe you should get a baby gate and keep them separate for a while. Then, if the contiue hissing, call a vet or an animal specialist to help you. PetSmart has some good training. Not just for dogs either. They'll train cats to do just about anything.

Maybe your two cats got into another mother/daughter fight.. or maybe they are fighting over a male cat they saw in a park or suttin.. try to kinda spy on them when they think you aren't home.. you might find out something you didn't expect. The same thing happened to me but my cats were male and thats what i did and i found out it was over a female cat!!!!!Or maybe they are just in bad moods... if you don't find anything out.. you should call your vet!!!

If you find anything out, let me know. I have seven cats, 4 of which are a mother & 3 daughters. I think they are like people, they & their personalities change. (think of teenage rebellion) I have one daughter that the mother just cannot stand!
We just try to make sure each cat gets some individual attention to try to avoid jealousy. I can't think of anything else to help you.
Sorry.

What you are seeing might me misplaced aggression. Look around your house for a window where they can see another cat, Maybe even something with the scent of another cat. One time my daughter brought a toy inside that had been sprayed by another cat and my cats went balistic!

One of them may have seen or heard something that really frightened them (like a dog out the window) and just wants to be left alone. She should settle down soon

Domestic cats are social animals. There is a good chance that they had a disagreement, just like humans.

cats can have feelings too, such as depression, happiness, and disagreements between another cat.Or the kittenmay have gotten old enough to have a dominance test(weird because they are females.)

Perhaps they are just pissed off at each other, lol. I have raised Siamese cats all my life and have found that they, just like people, do that on occasion.
