is it right to respond, "de puta madre" when somebody tells you "como estas"? i know that de puta madre literally means "of prostitute mother" but this guy i know said that it could also mean "i'm amazingly good". i don't know if it's just spanish slang or he is just simply playing tricks with me.

It's slang, but acceptable where slang is appropriate–that is, I wouldn't say it to my new boss or the King of Spain, but to my friends…sure.

Your friend is also right about usage, however - "¿Cómo estas?" "¡De puta madre, tío!" ("How are you?" "I'm f**king great, man!") The phrase is used to indicate quality - "Esto es de puta madre" means "This is f'n great!"

It's used in Spain as well as in Mexico…I'm not sure where else it's used, though.

Yes, it is right ti respond that. It is slang and the guy was not playing any tricks with you. And relax, you are not getting beat up if you answer this. But this slang varies in different countries in my country we say "del putas". But, of course, you don't answer like this to just anybody.

Saying "puta madre" is like saying "son of a beach" so whoever told you that it means you´re "amazingly good" is lying. "A toda madre" could mean "really f-ing good" and you could be confusing the 2 phrases.

Hi, im from Mexico. You can say that phrase to someone who also knows about it, indeed it means that you are incredible good, really happy.

Its a slang usually used by teenagers in Mexico. You can also use it to refer to an event that it was really cool, for example como estuvo el concierto (how was the concert) o como estuvo la pelicula (how was the movie)

He is just playing a trick on you. He is nuts for answering you like that when he knows you doesn't know the meaning of it. He should be thankful that you are trying to learn the language so he should teach you like some educated guy.

It is not correct spanish, but you can answer like that only to him or to other persons who speak similar. Do not use it with woman or with persons you are not familiar with.
