Search the web for the NVQ courses in Hairdressing at your nearest college. The NVQ courses are in 3 blocks of a year each and cover all aspects of hairdressing. I am starting in September! Do it soon though as spaces are limited.

Try to find a local slaon that offers either a apprenticeship or is affiliated to your local college. Many people think all they need to do is complete a college course in hairdressing and it will be easy to find a job after. This is not always true. My own salon would never take on a student from a college as we offer are own in salon training. Firstly find out what your local top end salons are offering. If you have your heart set on a intensive course you can not go far wrong with the Vidal Sasson, L'Oreal or Tony and Guy courses, however these are very expensive - we are talking £10000 for the vidal sasson course.
Furthermore, you will not become a top hairdressers instantly as a result, this will only come with experience of dealing with clients over a number of years. So if it is something you really want to do, check out the top quality salons in your area

At my local college they do an nvq 2 2 year programme and a fast track 1 year.
I wouldnt recommend doing it over a year though, or doing it at college.Try doing an apprenticeship, yes you can learn the techniques at college, but when you go to a salon, everything you learn will go out the window, as you will be squeezing people in, having to find ways to stretch development times out as you have a client in between etc etc
You need to get that salon experience whilst training or its a shock when you leeave college and start working in a salon

You REALLY need to want to do hair, because you put up with ALL kinds of stuff at beauty school!
Teachers, books, learning, memorizing, tests, other students that might not be nice to you , customers that are rude, rolling little ladies hair, teasing, learning how to do a fingerwave, pincurls, perms, -you name it.
You REALLY have to stick in there for 9 months! You can get a grant (by the way ), to go to beauty school. Go on to barber school afterwards (with a grant, also), and learn about men's cuts, and clipper cuts, and how to use the razor. It is awesome! You only have to go for 3 more months, and then you have 2 licenses. And LOTS of KNOWLEDGE!
