- Valid Passport
- Valid picture ID (Driver's license is the best)
- Visa (if required)
- Cash in small denominations ($20 or under)
- Visa TravelMoney (a card that can be used at any ATM in the world that accepts Visa, and it can be refilled with funds directly from your checking or savings account - this can be done on-line)
- A photocopy of your passport in a separate location (with your fellow traveler or in a separate bag, plus a copy back home)
- Depending on where you are going, it would be a good idea to register your trip with the US consulate or embassy at the country of destination - they will then be aware of your presence in the country in case of an emergency alert, natural disaster, terrorist attacks, etc. plus they can e-mail any necessary alerts to you
- A list of friends' names, addresses, phone and e-mail addresses - it's great for writing postcards, sending e-mail messages, etc.
IMPORTANT - keep your passport, some cash and your photo ID with you at all times, regardless of which country you are visiting - a money belt that can be worn under your clothes would be best.
Otherwise, have a fabulous time abroad - perhaps it will change your life...

A lot of it will depend on where you are going. Do make sure that you check if there any required vaccinations for the countries you will be visiting. Leave a photocopy of your passport at home and keep one in your wallet. Also leave an itinerary of your trip with friends or family at home just in case. If you are going to stay in a particular country for longer than a month I would recommend registering with your country's embassy in the country you are visiting. Depending on where you are going you may want to bring medication for traveller's diarrhea (sounds gross but you will be happy you did).

Passport is a must. In some cases a tourist visa too.
You should have travelers checks and at least some cash with you.
An address and phone number of the place where you are staying.

I found it good to take an address and phone number book with me. One for me of all my friends and contacts in Australia and another for my parents, so they could call me too. Not as important as passports etc, but very handy for that just in case senario.
