Each time I start word 2002 or when I start up my PC (XP) microsoft word trys to install something and asks for the installation disc. Since word 2002 was pre-intsalled on my pc, I click 'cancel' and an error message displays "error 1706. Set up cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network or CDROM drive. "

This started about 2 months ago and before that word worked fine. Any ideas?

It is attempting to preload part of the program on bootup.

First
Click the Start button, and then Run. Type in: msconfig
In the window that appears, click on the Startup tab
You will see a listing of all the programs being preloaded when you start your PC. Look through that and see if there is something being loaded from the Office directory. If so, uncheck it so it does not load.

Second
Click on the Start button and then All Programs. Find and click the Startup folder. If there are any selections in there that appear to be part of Office (the Office Toolbar, etc.) right click and delete them.

This should keep Office from preloading when you turn on the computer. It probably will not keep you from getting the error when you actual load Office/Word. You will need to reload the program to actually fix the problem. This will just keep the error from displaying every time you start the computer

I suggest you reinstall your office 2002 suite, to do this; insert your CD and let it auto run, click to install (browse the CD and click setup.exe if CD doesn’t auto run) you can choose to repair/reinstall, when you get the screen asking which apps you want to install click the check box for custom install, when you see a list of all the different office components you wish to install, left click the down arrow next to word and pick 'run all from my computers', do this with any of the other components you wish to install. You should have no further problems with word…
