The risky solution:

1. Use thin sliced bread

2. Keep cheese away from the crusts

3. Lie toaster on its side to prevent cheese running out the bottom

Toast it!

Using a grill or sandwich bag is probably the better idea though

Under the grill...you cant toast cheese in a toaster, and if you just toast the bread, the cheese won't melt properly.

under the grill the cheese falls off in the toaster and makes a right mess when it melts

Under the grill, how can you do it in the toaster without getting cheese EVERYWHERE?!

Neither.

Butter the outside of the bread on your cheese sandwich then simply place in a hot skillet over medium heat - when fully toasted and crispy on one side, carefully flip and toast the other side.

Absolutely no other way to make them any better

under the grill - unless you want a really messy/mucky toaster, and if you use the toaster at work your colleagues will get cross/hurt you.
