Why do people think of Mexicans when they hear illegal or immigrants? Also why do they have to stereotype us as a brown person that speaks Spanish?

Julie i dont think that English only in America is correct! Before America was conquered no one speaked english. just becasue they were conquered by the English doesnt mean that it is the only language! America is a nation formed by thousands of other cultures, not all of them have to speak English. So why dont you take your opinions somewhere else!? I certantly dont want to here them!

Actually there are several reasons that this is the case---1--there are far more hispanics here in those categories than any other race or creed of recent times (illegals and immigrants)---and-- 2---it is the brown Spanish speaking hispanic that most people are famitliar with----the larger per centage of the population has had very little experience with any other type of hispanic individuals

Another comparitive could easily be---when you think of an African---there is the strongest possibility that you are going to picture a black person---when in fact there are literally millions of Africans that are white and brown and every shade in between--and like wise they do not all speak Swahelle or Zulu ---they speak in all kinds of languages and dialetics

I don't, you do.

Others may.

However, I think of illegal immigrants as coming from a variety of countries. Look at the questions and be fair, how many of the pro-illegals themselves put this in terms of Mexicans and Latin Americans?

I like Mexicans. I don't want to pay for illegal immigrants and have their above-budgeted numbers overcrowding and straining school quality. I don't want my health care costs higher because I am paying not only for my family and my share of the poor legally here, but also for those illegally here.

I could care less what country they come from. There is only so much to go around.

We aren't intolerant. We gave amnesty to 2.3 million people in 1986 - which was supposed to be a one time thing after which laws would be enforced.

There are a much bigger number here now straining our systems and draining funds we subsidize for poor people even when they pay all applicable taxes. We can't afford to take care of all of the poor of the world. We have to take care of our own first.

With an estimated 20 million illegal aliens being from Mexico, um, do I have to say more to that? The second part of your question hits home. When I see white people in other countries, I automatically think they can speak English. Don't worry about it, if its part of your heritage, be proud of it. The world is not perfect nor is anyone in it. Politically correctness will never be correct in my book. What I mean is maybe on the outside we try and say the correct things, which I think is called politeness and kindness. But I think that we don't always say what we mean.

The fact remains that 80% of the immigrants to this country are from Mexico, or Cuba. Because Mexico is closest, the cubans will be included in a quota statistic.
But if they learn to speak english, and become a citizen, they're numbers will have little effect.

Because most of the illegals come from Mexico. Also, many Mexicans disrespect Americans and have a false sense of entitlement. Their May day thing hurt them a lot. That is a perfect example of their contempt for a nation that has given them so much. They proved that they didn't respect us or our flag and they were "biting the hand that feeds them."

I am not one to stereotype. I think that they usually do that because the majority of illegal immigrants are Mexican. Also I think they are brown and speak Spanish because my husband is brown and speaks spanish, his brothers and friends and all the people from his town are brown and speak spanish. I am not saying that there are not illegals from China, Vietnam, Bosnia, Russia...etc. But when I think Mexican, I think brown and speaks Spanish.

sterotypes, as unfair as they may seem to affect an individual, are based ultimately on observable facts.
the fact is that most mexicans speak spanish and are brown skinned. sorry if you do not like anyone to notice that but we do have eyes and ears.

there are a few illegal immigrants from other countries around here , but most are from mexico due to proximity and opportunity.
just a fact. not prejudice

so get over it and be proud of what you are.

I cant answer why they think so, because I don't live in the US.
But regarding the stereotype of the Mexican I can say:
- Because they dont know Mexico.
- It is true that most of the Mexicans have a brown color skin, but there also Mexicans who have white color skin.
Most of the countries in the American Continent (North, Central and South) have multi ethnical nations.

First of all, you are tan and most of us are white. Second of all, we have no problem with legal immagrants, just problems with illegal immagrants, they do take away jobs and health care for the people here earning a living and paying for it in taxes.Illegal immagrants don't pay taxes or for health care, which is one of the biggest problems in the US. We should not have to learn Spanish, YOU should have to learn English, just like if you went to China or any other country that doesn't speak your language. Our fathers and their fathers have learned it, there shouldn't be a problem.

While there are plenty of other illegal immigrants, since Mexico shares a border with the US, that is where a lot of the illegals do come from.
