When you are at home recovering, what are some things that can happen? My fiance's temp keeps going up and down and they say it could be heart lining inflamation, His eyesight is getting worse - I know that anesthetic can do a lot of strange things too. Please tell me the things that have happened to you or your loved ones so I can pass it on to him. The hospital, nurses and Dr's have not told him anything. Thank you.

They should have given him some educational materials to help during this time. Encourage him to exercise as much as the doctors will let him. Depression is a very common side effect. One of the biggest complaints is pain where the vein graft was removed - usually the ankles. A complication to look for is blood clot or stroke. Some healthy life style changes and participating in a cardiac rehab program is very helpful. Encourage him to spend some time on an old hobby (or find a new one) while he is recovering.

There is life after this surgery. It is absolutely amazing what the body can go through!

How long has it been since your fiance's quadruple bypass? If your fiance's has fever it can be a sign of infection. You also mentioned about his eyesight getting worse which gives you reason to bring your fiance to his doctor to rule out TIA (Transient Ischemic Attacks) or Stroke.

While Mayo Clinic stated in their website that " After surgery, most people have improvement or complete relief of their symptoms and remain symptom-free for several years. Over time, however, it's likely that other arteries or even the new graft used in the bypass will become clogged, requiring another bypass or angioplasty.
Although bypass surgery improves blood supply to the heart, it doesn't cure underlying coronary artery disease. The results and long-term outcome will depend in part on following healthy lifestyle recommendations and taking the medication as directed."
Stop smoking.
Reduce cholesterol levels.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Control blood pressure.
Manage diabetes.
Exercise.

I will tell you what I think because I was there. The bypass is very scary and the stress could cause him many problems. If he was not OK he would not be at home. Rehab is a must and the doctor should prescribe it for him. Tell him to relax and be thankful he caught a break.
