Generally pre-packaged veggies (like bagged lettuce) canned and frozen veggies are washed, while the ones you find on crates that you bag yourself aren't (even if they were, a lot of people touch them before you even set your eyes on them) All veggies that are not labeled organic have either been sprayed with or have absorbed through the plant's root system, man-made fertilizers and/or pesticides. Its a good idea to wash the fresh produce you buy to clear away chemicals and bacteria on the surface and thouroughly cook all frozen and canned produce to kill bacteria. However, like was the case here in Minnesota, sometimes a bacteria or chemical seeps in through the roots of a plant and contaminates a vegetable from the inside out. Washing the surface won't get rid of it, and if it's something like lettuce that you eat raw, you're probably not going to boil it. So should you just not eat lettuce or anything else that might be contaminated from the inside out? No, because these cases are rare-especially here in the US, and the benefits for eating produce, at least here in the US, far outweigh the risks. Just don't buy bruised or bloated produce and try not to eat too much of one thing (reducing your intake of potentially harmful chemicals and bacteria from one particular batch of produce) Hope that helps a bit!

Sometimes the less handling they do, the fresher the product will be. So no, they don't always wash. Sometimes there is a lot of 'stuff' on them. Dirt, Pesticides, fly poop..whatever..possiblities endless. Hey, even if washed, you don't know what the fella had on his hands who went around testing the fruits for freshness. Be safe and wash em..

most leaf vegetables are, though they are not exactly washed in the sense, they are dipped into cool water to remove dirt/mud and to refresh them so they don't look wilted.

they are "washed" in a way...just enough to make them look good. apples, pears, broccoli and many other fruits and veggies are then given a shining of wax. to make them look shiny and pretty, sounds crazy but its true. would you buy a dull looking apple or a shiny one??
anyways...that is why you really need to clean fruit and veggies well before you consume them

They are more misted with water, but there is still all sorts of pesticides and nasty stuff...so I would wash them when you bring them home if I were you!
