Yet he smokes a pipe throughout the day, has no problems taking long walks, mowing his yard or doing other physically demanding chores. He said he receives a monthly compensation check from the government for this disease. It doesn't seem that he is disabled to me. Any comments?

You don't inhale smoking a pipe so it does not matter if you have black lung or not. Mind your own business.

If he is receiving a check for it, then he has been examined, and his doctor feels that he does in fact have it. It is possible that his disease is mild or that he is just coping well. As far as doing his chores goes, if he can still do them, that is great! I have a child with an interstitial lung disease, and other than the oxygen, she appears perfectly normal. I had a lady come up to me once and say that she does not think my baby really has anything wrong with her, that she has seen babies on oxygen before (premature babies), and those other babies look more "afflicted." That really upset me. She had no idea that my daughter had already suffered respiratory failure from this, that biopsy had proven this disease. Not to scold because I'm sure you mean well, but unless you are a doctor who has examined your neighbor and you know your neighbor's medical and occupational history, there is no way for you to know for sure. It is possible, even probable, that your neighbor is telling the truth.

If he has worked in the coal mines for any amount of time he is ENTITLED to receive, not from the government but from the coal mines a black lung benifit. My father worked in the mines for 24 years, he had severe black lung. I don't matter if they look disabled or not, its something like workers comp for an injury they got from work. and WE are not the ones paying for this, THE MINES ARE.

black lung -- not necessarily smoking, he could have gotten it because of his occupation. (what was his occupation?)

if he doesn't look sick right now, if he IS diagnosed with it, because of smoking, it could get worse. he's probably at the early stage of the disease right now and he thinks nothing is wrong inside... yet.

or it could be an inside job. if he applied for disability -- he would need to prove it of course -- but if he knew somebody who can "diagnose" -- then that's enough to rip off the government. (notice the quotation marks?) -- you have no idea how easy it is to pretend to diagnose inside the hospital. it's a scam that is hard to prove.

if it was true -- i don't think he's getting enough money.

Yes, I have a comment. I wish I were there to tell him to stop talking to you. You are not his physician, his disability worker or his attorney, are you? Then you have no idea what his medical, financial or legal position is, except what he's chosen to tell you.

His physician, lawyers from the company (who try to stop disability claims because it increases their workers comp payments), and his disability eligibility worker have determined that he needs the check.

Butt out. You will sleep better at night.

Black lung has nothing to do with smoking.
He possibly worked in a coal mine which is the most common cause

THEY DON"T RECIEVE THOSE CHECKS UNLESS THEY WERE EXAMINED, he's probably really struggling to keep doing the things he's always done, Why don't you be a good neighbor and ask him if there's something you can help him with.

well it sounds to me you are a little bit nosy.. he paid it in let them give it back to him..my son got hurt at work he cant stand on his leg yet he got it cought and almost lost his leg .now he has to fight with comp to try to keep his check untill he can get well enough to go back to work..if you work and pay it in why shouldent they give it to him...its not comming out of your pocket.. try to get yours when you really need it..and see what happens.
