As a Southern white male that loves sushi people including myself are ignorant to things they are not acustomed to. I first tried sushi about 5 years ago and now that I took the time to understand it I know what all it really is. And its my favorite food. But until you take the time to learn you'll never know.

to people with out a vast knowledge of foods use general terms. My daughter loves California Rolls which contains crabmeat and veggies. But when she started eating it at age 5 it was hard to explain to her that what she liked was wrapped in Seaweed. If you really want to see and taste more ask around and go to a good Sushi bar. though it can get expensive! just take the time to explain to the uneducated.

It's because they're ignorant morons.
I wouldn't mind if they could just accept the truth!! But no, they HAVE to insist that THEY are right, and Japanese people are wrong!
; )
And whoever complained about how long it took to convince people that sushi contains rice - you're only half right! Because I can guarantee that there are still loads of people out there who remain unconvinced - and we're going to have to start explaining it ALL over again soon! (lol!)

Because you were paying attention to the menu and so you know the difference between sushi & sashimi, and they weren't! The fact that this surprised you makes me think you are smart but probably quite young. Since you are smart, you best get used to how much most people don't know!

Apparently, no, they don't know about sashimi.
Don't try to educate them; it took *this* long just to get them to understand that sushi has rice.
