If it's a kitten, start her on wet OR Soft kitten food. This normally goes on for at least a couple months (3, could take up to 5), that way he/she is fully developed, and you can make the move on to adult food.
If he's older than 6 months, you can start with Adult food, again, either wet or dry. And, i hate to say it, but, in my experience, Whiskas, even though it is a little expensive, actually does the trick. Develops a nice fur, shiny, and promotes growth. I've been feeding my cat nothing but whiskas, and he's...wow.
The only thing i reccomend, is if you do give him/her wet food, don't make it a 3 times daily habit. Once at night would do the trick. But, you do wanna make sure that's even with the dry food.
Make sure the Taurine is quite low, less than 4%. Anything like that should be low, but, make sure it is high in vitamins, expecially Vitamin D and A.
Crude Protien should NOT be less than 30%. Crude Fat, not less than 10. Moisture shouldn't be more than 12%, and Phosphorus should be low too...but, not less than 1%.
That's for Dry food.
Hope that helps =)

I was a breeder for a number of years. I feed my cats "Iams" If the cat is under a year of age, I would feed the Iams Kitten food. It costs a little more, but is much, much better for your pet than the cheaper brands, such as Purina, Friskies, etc. that you buy at the grocery store. Grocery stores are finally carrying some of the better cat foods now, such as Iams or Science Diet. The slightly more expensive foods are better for your pet, as they have fewer dyes and more of the nutrients your pet requires to be healthy. Science Diet is good, but my cats didn't like the taste of it nearly as well as Iams. Iams also makes a very good food called "Eukneuba" (I think that's how you spell it), and all of my cats (even the very picky eaters) absolutely go nuts for that!!

Get dry food according to your cats age. If your cat is a neutered male, make sure to have a food low in ash. They need lots of water to drink (when they want to drink) and find a snack that you can play by tossing and they'll chase to eat. Cats r fun!

Cat food. Iams or Eukanuba are good brands. There are different formulas of food depending on the age or activity level of the cat (kitten, indoor cat, senior cat, etc).
