There is no such process, exclusively.

Some people indoctrinated by a church at an early age later challenge the preconceptions of their youth. Some of them find a stronger faith; some remain unsure and unwilling to commit; some turn away completely. So you have:

"Believers" => Believers
"Believers" => Agnostics
"Believers" => Atheists

Some people who have no religious training as a kid later on become more accepting of either the possibility of God, or even become spiritual and leave atheism behind.

Atheists => Believers
Atheists => Agnostics
Atheists => Atheists

If you are asking whether the conversion to atheism from former religious training is based on social pressure, well, no -- you can't blame it entirely on social pressure.

(In fact, in the U.S., I think between 80-90% of people believe in SOME sort of God -- agnosticism is okay, but pure atheism is not exactly a majority opinion.)

Atheism can occur because one has a purely intellectual bent and so disregards all things spiritual.

It can also be contributed to by painful experiences of personal loss (where God is considered a monster if he would exist, so it's easier to believe he does not); or from rejection/injustice by those who claim to be spiritual.

Sometimes people choose atheism for, what seems to them to be, good reasons.

While society's mindset can impact what one is exposed to, choosing to deny God occurs individually.
