Each branch of the military has an enlisted to commissioned officer program. Find out about the Navy's by talking to a recruiter.

Your best bet is to do at least one stint as an enlisted sailor. If you decide you want to make a career out of the Navy, get involved in whatever program they have to make you a commissioned officer. That way, it is possible to go to school on the Navy's dime - sometimes while on active duty. After four years, your schooling will be done (unless you decide to go for a masters or doctorate which, in some cases, the military may pay for) and you can move on to the next phase of your career.

One point I don't think ANY military will argue - the absolute BEST officers were once enlisted. They understand the difference between enlisted and commissioned officers and actually let enlisted members do their jobs without interfering too much.

EDIT: Wow! There sure is a lot of ignorance about the military displayed in some of these answers. Choose your answer - and your career plans - carefully. Talk over whatever decision you make with a recruiter. Talk it over with someone currently in the Navy. Get differing opinions - but be leery of advice from non-military members.

I agree with Sgt K completely. Especially if you are planning on making a career out of the Navy, your best bet is going to be to enlist first and then go officer. Your college will still be paid for by the military, and you will get so much more respect as an officer if you are prior enlisted. You will also have a much better idea of how to lead people based on your experiences as an enlisted person. Besides, not all enlisted rates involve peeling potatoes. I was a CTI (Linguist) and I had a great time - not to mention the outstanding education I received.

Do the NROTC. I did mine the hard way. Went enlisted reserve as a Hospital Corpsmen, then when I finished college became a Hospital Administrator. Had I gone NROTC, I would have gotten more money for school, and would have gone in as a LTJG instead of Ensign. Best of luck to you either way, I served during the first Desert Storm in '91, this war seems alot more nasty.

If you've already made up your mind to join the Navy then if possible you should go to college first and do the ROTC route. You will go in as an officer and make more money along with more prestige. RHIP (rank has it's priviledges)

Of course if you want to be a Man's Man then you should go into the Marine Corps

You can enlist in the reserves and got NROTC, then you get all the benifits like GI Bill, bonuses, and Tuition assistance. Plus you will have seen both side of the ranks, enlisted and officer.

and just to make sure you understand...you dont wait til AFTER college for NROTC...that's your start...your college is paid for. So make sure you apply well in advance of when you want to start college...that means....find a school with a NROTC program and talk to a recruitor and get your applications in on time.

Its all about choice. As an officer you get to better choose your career path in the Navy. As an enlisted man. you pretty much have to do what they tell you; drive trucks, peel potatoes, etc.

Go to college.....You might even discover that there are things besides the military that you can do.
