Is there a lot of racial discrimination in the Navy? I am a Korean-American interested in joining the US Navy, but was wondering if there was discrimination, and/or hazing.

I'm black and although I didn't serve in the Navy I was in the Marines and didn't feel any institutional racism. If fact in my five years in I received two meritorious promotions and a meritorious mast. I did know a few rednecks who flew rebel flags or whatever but they never tried anything. The Marines (Navy) takes any racism or sexism / Sexual Harassment charges VERY seriously. The Navy is very diverse (more so than the Marines) people from every race and creed. And at the end of the day your all shipmates so someone may hate your guts on ship but in port if some civilians f*ck with you they'll have your back.
There will be hazing but so what boot camp or OCS is one big haze-fest. You'll be fine. It's meant to break you down to build you up. After you get "hazed" you'll feel like you belong more and you'll get satisfaction in knowing the next guy's gonna get his.

There is a broad range of discrimination in all military services. Race is paramount and utterly contemptible and so is rank discrimination. No service makes any attempt to curtail, disown or outlaw it. No one in their right mind should contend with the ever widening gap between officers and enlisted ranks.
About time congress, high ranking senior military and the Presidents office got off their butts and remedied it.

And its long overdue that US Navy enlisted personnel had a decent uniform. That crap they have to wear is archaic and for the birds and thousands of young men (who would volunteer) just do not want to wear it.

No. There is rank discrimination......The lower the rank, the more you put up with, but no, to the navy you are a sailor and nothing else. This goes for all the services. The civilian sector could learn a lot about true equality from them.

Hakit sounds a little angered. Something happened to him in the Navy.

Of course there is rank "discrimination," its the foundation of good order and discipline in the military. Officers are senior to enlisted, just as an E-8 is to an E-4.

As with any large organization, there is a risk of it. It´s not the Navy but remember it´s the people in it. You will get some idiots who can only inflate their own importance by attempting to make others seem less important. They are "termed" racists, but in actual fact are only bullies, who try to find a weak person they can intimidate and get others to join in. Good recruit staff are trained to weed these types out during basic training, as they are no good in any situation where teamwork is paramount. My advise is go for it, if you´ve got what the Navy want, they´ll not let some idiot or idiots deprive them of a good man. Best of luck in your chosen career.

There are racist everywhere, but discrimination and hazing are both illegal in the Navy. And trust me...people take that seriously. You don't want to loose your rank because of another person.

there is always going to be racial discrimination but in the military service they take steps to get rid of it. the military is an equal opportunity employer who employs all races and/or nationalities. the service has whats called an equal opportunity program to prevent against discrimation, sexual harrassment and all that stuff. if i were you i would join because you want to not because you are worried about discrimination.

Yes,
Not that it will do you any good but it usually has nothing to do with race, gender or whatever. There always are people getting pissed on by those that have a weak bladder.
